Take your time making this decision. You can't reverse it. I have had pets who have been neutered/spayed at 5 months and they turned out fine. I have known and do know many many people who have done the surgery early and have had no negative side effects from doing it that early. Sometimes it may stop a male from wandering or being more aggressive (really cant know for sure) and sometimes it does not seem that way at all. Also, Ive said it before, an un-neutered male has a much, much, greater risk of getting testicular cancer than any of the men on this forum. Then on the other hand I've seen a lot of un-neutered dogs with no problems at all. I had a dog neutered at over 2 years and he never did fill out to be muscular like his parents, and I don't think it made any differnce in his personality at all. Then again I probably will never neuter my GSD. Usually it's cheaper to get it done when they are small too. Don't let anyone push you either way. Take your time and make an informed decision.

Unlike Jenni, I am very pro-neuter and spay (but then, I work in rescue).Angela, I apologize if I mis-interpreted your first statement, but it sounded rather condescending ("but then, I work in rescue")

I simply stated that I work in rescue to shed light on one of the reasons why I am *for* neutering and spaying, especially of non-working pet animals. (Sort of like how Ed always talks about his experience with dogs before he starts giving his advice). It was not a reflection on you or any of the work you have done. Although I see how it could be interpreted as such, now that you point it out.

Hi Maisha, I think if you decide to neuter, wait until the dog is completely finished growing up. I do not alter my dogs and have never had a single problem with them being overly preocupied with sex and/or mounting, or any other issue related to them being intact once mature. I have seen many puppies go through this stage, but it's just a stage, if correctly trained it's a non-issue.

I just wanted to let you know that when I adopeted Bella, she had two stuffed animals that she would do the horizontal mambo with...all the time! When I adopted Bella, the previous owner just loved this cute trick! Well, I guess it was cute compared to jumping up and biting on the face, jumping up on the couch, a quick 360* on the ground, and back up on the couch...So, it isn't limited to just males, and I think like Jenni said, with the proper leadership and foundation, this won't happen.

Bottom line is the dog should not jump up on you, and it can't hump your leg without putting it's front paws on you. So, it is a simple matter of teaching the dog respect for you. Also, we threw those two stuffed animals away, and she never tried to hump anything again!

First, I would like to say that I am not neutered.
When I was a little younger I was dating this girl. She had a lot of cute friends and I mounted a couple of them. When she found out she was mad and she got rid of me, sent me to the pound. After I was there for awhile this other really nice girl adopted me. She was more strict with me and trained me better, so, I didn't mount any of her friends, but, I still thought about it.

LOL, LOL, LOL!!!

I hope everyone is having a great day and this made you laugh a little.
Great advice from everyone!
