Kodee has had his ear glued (and previously taped) for about a month now. A couple of days ago, the foam insert was falling out of his ear, so I went ahead and removed it. His ear has stayed up since then. However, the inner edge of the ear (the edge closest to the center of the top of his head) is still "soft." It hangs down just very slightly, and flops a little bit when he moves around. However, his ear is definitely up, and the outer edge is nice and firm.
Should I re-glue again til that one edge firms up? Or will it do this on it's own? I don't want it to stay soft in that one spot forever, but I'm not sure what will happen if I don't re-glue. He's almost 7 mos old now, just FYI. The glue and foam doesn't bother him, so that's not an issue, I just don't know whether to leave well enough alone.

The other thing is if your pup is a coat, it may help (a lot) to shave the hair on the outside of the ear, just until the ear stands firm. I have heard of coat puppies hair hindering the ear from standing.
Susan - By "coat" do you mean a plush coat? Kodee isn't a long-haired GSD (or at least he wasn't supposed to be when I bought him - ha ha), but does have an extremely thick coat, and it's longer around his head/ears than the rest of his body (although he seems to be shedding some of the longer hair as he gets older). Anyway, I hadn't thought of that, as I did cut some of the fluff (but not much) around his ear before gluing the first time, just to make sure I was gluing the foam to his ear skin and not his fur. I didn't even think about the fur weighing his ear down, though. I will look at his ear tomorrow and depending on how it looks, I may shave some off. I went ahead and re-glued his ear up this evening. The gluing I've done so far has made a huge improvement, and I finally figured better safe than sorry.
Thanks for the idea - hadn't thought of all that fur being heavy...

Yes, I should have said that, it applies to GSDs with real plush coats, not just long coats - pups with big ears too. I read this tip on another board from a person who is very experience in this department. She said the heaviness of the thicker coated GSDs can make a difference in the ears being able to stand during the growth of the dog and recommended shaving the outer hair of the ear just until it stands firm. She also suggested light massaging of the ear, which helps with the blood flow (be very careful, you don't want to accidently damage the cartiledge). The other thing she said is that chewing on RAW bones actually helps too, but I'm not sure why. I'm going to try to find the link to the discussion, and if I find it I will PM it to you.
