Dear Jennifer;
The 200 NCP is the collar of choice for most dogs, and for almost all situations. When the collar is introduced to the dog properly thru obedience, the dog then is educated and when you have to move to use the collar in the correction phase, the level can be much lower. It is your responsibility to be proactive and anticipate when and what the dog will react to so that you can ask for attention at a much lower level. I do enjoy the digital read out, but I use my collar in a different way, (as an instructor). Purchasing the collar for the digital readout I can accept. Purchasing for added power so you can "schock the crap" out of your dog is bad dog training.
The cinch it collars are way too cool and way too easy!!!!!!
Please be aware that the e collar should be moved at least once in a 6 hour period and if you use a cinch it, please move the collar up or down the neck as the material does not breath.
My favorite is green, but Lakota is getting a pink one!
thanks roni, that's great to know. i will definitely get that one.
....powerwise, it is just b/c there are times when i correct teagan and i can't correct her hard enough to get her to break her behaviour/get her attention, and i'm not a weak girl, so i wasn't sure how much i would need. but i definitely don't want to shock the crap out of her, that seems really....cruel. i have no problems with correcting when appropriate, but not beyond that
okay, i guess you move the collar b/c of the points, where they are touching? i'm going to get the video and watch it a few times first, also i read you should spend some time getting the dog used to wearing the collar b/f you actually start using it.
thanks for your help! i'm actually getting really excited about this. i was thinking once we move w/a yard, i could start working outside w/teagan w/one maybe, but the thought it could help with her manners around the small animals inside as well is exciting!
I have used it and instructed my students to use it for just that reason. No eating kittys in the house. Dogs really understand the collars, very little body language from us. It really stops conflict between the dog and their person. The most important benefit of using the e collar is that it builds an amazing relationship!!!!!! For me, that's what it is all about. Making a difference, one dog at a time!!!!!!!! Dogs, are soooo happy when we finally "get it"!!!!
Jennifer;
On a side note about the level of correction on a pinch collar verus a level of correction on a e collar...... completely different. Most people have desensitized the dogs necks to jerks on the collar. The stimulation from an e collar is different and if we have educated the dog correctly, and taught the dog what to do when they feel the stimulation, (like focus on us)the dog reacts appropriately.
I have the Dogtra 1700, which seems to be the predecessor to the 1900. The Leerburg video is very good. I watched it a couple of times before I actually used the collar on my dog. In the video Ed explains how to introduce the collar to the dog. It takes some time, which gives you time to study the video.
I noticed this with my guy for sure. I've used corrections very sparingly, but still it takes quite a correction on a prong collar to get a response. I rarely have to push the button on the e-collar, and almost never have it turned up above 70. It seems so much kinder than a prong correction.
i'm thinking one thing too about being able to correct at a level she notices w/out a physical aspect will also be really positive, b/c on some level a physical interaction like that which nothing comes out of - well, i wonder if it helps to teach her that she can ignore the prong, and me - the desensitization you're talking about. she definitely is at a higher proper behavioural level on the prong then a flat collar, and i'm wondering if i'll see a further change on an e-collar.
i'm really trying to work on my body language, actually - i've realized teagan works almost entirely from my signals, intentional or unintentional. she responds almost perfectly to hand signals, but is a bit more....deaf....to verbal commands (except, of course, 'okay' which is our break command....that one she gets immediately!) i think this could really help w/that, b/c i won't be uselessly jerking/correcting on the prong, she won't be able to ignore me as much, which i'm hoping will translate over and make my body language more effective in obed. situations as well as being a good tool for the aggressive behaviour.
