Well, I have made appts to tour 2 different animal hospitals this week, as well as meet the Drs. One vet has owned GSD's for years, and she does both traditional and alternative medicine (acupuncture, chiro). So far that one is looking pretty good to me.
The receptionist at the second place didn't give me as much information, but I'm still going to check it out. It looks like a good place as far as the website information indicates, but I will tour the facility and meet the Drs there as well.
I'll probably check out a couple of other places as well, but I'm kind of excited to find a vet that practices alternative medicine...

I second the comment about ultrasound - its takes more than good equipment to get good results, and a poorly performed ultrasound misinterpreted by an inexperienced vet is a waste of your money.
Besides that, I'd ask questions if I saw what I thought was a dearth of the latest diagnostic equipment.
Three vet offices in this town share the most expensive equipment, including the ultrasound equipment, which goes in a van that was modified for it to whichever vet needs it. (This isn't unusual. Another vet in town borrows from a larger facility in a nearby big city.)
My questions might be geared more towards the availability of someone experienced in ultrasonography.
Just a small point among many, but the shiny new machines in the back rooms aren't as important to me as the vet's ideas and experience, as long as those machines can be had when needed. It would be nice if the home of the latest equipment was also where the best vet was, but this isn't necessarily the case.
Thanks for the link, Lynne. One of the vets I called yesterday is actually a member of the AHVMA. I'm waiting for her to call me (she's closed Mondays, which I just realized when I looked at her site. Oops - I was wondering why I hadn't heard back). There is another vet on the list farther away, but not too far to drive if she's good...Maybe I'll call her if the others don't pan out.
