Thanks everyone for such sound advice. I have two of Ed's dvds and I was just getting my budget together. I went to the puppy page on LB and I was confused with all the different choices of leads and collars. I was thinking which one and for what purpose. Everyone gave me a clear answer, thanks. My puppy equipment is about to cost as much as the puppy.

And Sandy,
Don't worry I have the treats and bowls and...oh it's a lot, on my list. We will be feeding raw which is another story for another thread that I'm sure I'll be starting soon.

Yep. But keep in mind that your pup won't outgrow the leashes and with a little care you can keep them for a lifetime.

Make that WAAAAY more!
I was actaully thinking the other day about what the most useful things I ever bought for the dog were (amongst all the crap).
The top 5 (in order) were:
1. Crate!
2. Prong collar
3. Good leather leash and long line
4. Rawhide chews - when they're old enough
5. Holey roller/jolly ball/orbee ball
Obviously, the DVDs were for me, not the dog The dvds do cover collars in some detail, and watching the puppy dvd now is showing me what I did wrong (and right). I happened to get a 'police' leash first thing, and I have to say it's still one of my favourites - I like the flexibility of its multiple D-rings.
Collars are fairly cheap. Good leashes aren't. Get a quality leather leash and a cotton long line - can't go wrong!
HTH

I would say our really nice leather leash is the best investment I have made with the dogs, it was pricey but has paid for itself many times over.
I have had our leather leash for going on 12 years, it has been through the ringer and survived the tethering and teeth of three puppies in three years.
I have also washed it in the washing machine when it got nasty from being drug through potty time. MY husband put some baseball glove oil on it and it was like new!
It also doesnt tear up my hands like the woven ones and is way better than getting rug burns or blisters when training for walks or "wait"

Okay, this might be a really dumb question but I have ask. I was looking at the drag leash and I realize it doesn't have a loop to protect the puppy but how do you tether it to you? To me the leash with the loop would be easier to tether than one without. This is kind of embarrassing but you guys have made me feel comfortable enough to ask anything.

My puppy equipment is about to cost as much as the puppy.
It can/will get much worse
I have for over 2500$ worth of dog material in my car
full bitesuit
2 e-collars
several sleeves, collars, leashes, longlines, muzzles etc
Normaly i use only some of it but within a typical month i will have used almost everything, for one reason or another, except my spare muzzle.
Greetings
Johan
PS i have to empty it when i'm going to the do the shopping

I tied it to a belt. I bought the longer one, and it's soft enough to tie. I liked the idea of hands-free, and because the drag line has no handle it was an easy transition from being tied to me, to dragging the line. No embarrassment needed . EVERYONE starts at the beginning .
I've spent an unspeakable amount of money on dog equipment . But I feel as long as I don't spend as much as my daughter spends on horse equipment I'm good. Since she's an eventer and they seem to need three of everything, it looks like I still have some catching up to do . Hows that for justification ?
