I do know some people who insist that it would cause damage and claim to have studies to prove it.This was brought up in an argument against crate training puppies on another board. I'm pretty firm in I don't know as my answer but I imagine it's very uncomfortable.
Just an idea but you could do something similar to potty training and just continue to bring them out to the kennel on a leash and say "go pee." When they do give them a treat. Usually once you get them started on a spot it's hard to get them to stop.
