I have GSDs and have always used the extra large links, BUT considering your back, the strength of the breed, and the exuberance of his youth, I think you would be wise to follow Lynns lead.
I love the pictures of your dog. He has one of those adorable Baby Huey sort of faces that makes people want to cuddle and love on him (of course only a fool would take that liberty unless they were on a fist name basis with him).
I have GSD's ( and a new Sepweiler puppy....GSD/Rottie cross). I use 2.25mm Sprenger prongs with extra links for two reasons ......you can get a far more acccurate fit and you need a lighter touch...because the fit is perfect,I have never had a problem with a prong 'springing off'
I would go with the smallest diameter that is practical for you dog and add extra links....

I agree with using Herm Sprenger collar as well.
I have a prong that was purchased at Pet Smart and it hangs on the wall as a conversation piece as it came apart one time and cost me a cat . (I know, I know.....DD collar.....which I use now as well)
The Herm Sprengers as well as the Stainless Steel prongs (I got them here actually) have never caused me an issue.
(not sure what the size is in numbers, but it is a medium link, I also have the smaller ones and the larger ones but I like the medium one)
