ok I guess it's not of the norm. I was just worried it was something worse. And I use the furminator about two times a week so it's not all the time. Thanks for all the input. Guess I should invest in a Dyson! hahaha..

I always heard that females shed more than males - maybe that's a myth?! I got a male golden retriever this time, as our last was a female and she shed horribly! This one, the male, doesn't shed nearly as much. It must just be that I got lucky instead of the gender!
I think it could also be our dogs are in and out of the house. The shedding is triggered by changes in season and temp and we, with heat and air conditioning, confuse the dog's thermostats.
(All outside only dogs I have seen over my almost 50 years have not been big shedders but 2 times a year.)
You have to make sure that when you are brushing your dog,be sure to get all the dead hair out. I myself brush daily as I have a long haired female gsd who does she alot but at the same time, the better the grooming will eliminate some of the shedding but not all. Hope this was helpful.
Yes GSD 's shed the worst as a dog groomer and having owned one myself they do shed constantly, Yes diet helps but a proper grooming will only make a difference for a few weeks but will help get the majority of it if it is "ready" to shed.
unspaid females will shed more and also as i said diet makes a differance but health issues and parasites allergies and also a "nervous" or "stressed" dog sheds more as well as after any anesthetic, thyroid problem
When groomed properly the shedding will be nonexistent briefly (3-4weeks)if not done right it will increase the shedding
GSD's are the most fun to deshed because they shed so much and look awesome when all clean and shiney with the undercoat removed (mostly done during the bath with deshedding shampoo and water pressure, falls right out in globs)I am talking pet grooming not show grooming!
The undercoat releases with warm water and really clean coat and special sprayer and technique( 2 shampooings) then a deshedding conditioner treatment ..... I actually prefer a gsd to not get groomed very often too often is not good.
My two GSDs are both outside kennel dogs. Both have thick undercoats that have just started their spring/summer molt. The shorthair sheds heavily and constantly. The longhair sheds twice a year.
I don't believe it's inside vs outside or necessarily what the dog is fed (IF it's a good diet). It's the genetics of the individual dog.
I've just about shed myself bald.......but I blame that on my grandad. ;-)
