I have rat terriers for the purpose of keeping the moles out of the yard and they do a great job. They are fun little guys to.
I have 2 pyrenees that their job is to guard the property for coyotees or other unwanted animals. We have a lot of problems with them, (or should say Had a lot of problems, because the dogs keep them away.) They are very good with all my other dogs and do their job well.
I am in the process of teaching my poodle some tricks to build up to doing some chores, just for fun.

You guys crack me up. I really want to give them something to do because they need to have a job, or feel useful. Bindi has already scared away every gopher in the back part of our property.
Cody is in the process (he thinks) of eating every lizard we have in our yard ....of course he has to catch them first. He has scared every rabbit out of our yard, but running along side it!
Well I think I will begin teaching them to pick things up. that is a start. I don't leave their toys around they are for rewards, but I could make a box and after they play with them (for being obedient or just good) they could put them away.
I could teach them to bring me their leash etc.
Now I just have to figure out how to teach those behaviors.
My dogs are too short to reach light switches.
THanks for the ideas!

Get the book 101 Dog Tricks by Kyra Sundance and Chalcy. It is great, shows teaching step by step and there is pictures showing the steps. It also troubleshoots problems you might encounter while teaching each step.

I thought it would be cute to teach Triton (dobe) how to go get me a soda (I don't really drink beer). We started with empty cans (at that time we only had glass bottles), and I showed him where to find them and he already knows how to pick things up. We eventually worked up to full un open cans of soda. When he got really good at going into the kitchen and bringing me a soda into the living room and dropping it in my hand, I wanted to show my husband what I had done. I was so clever, I thought! The first one he did great, but, my husband was so excited, htold him to go get him a soda too. Excitement = Excitement.
Triton got so excited, he ran to my husband with the soda can and bit down. Soda shot everywhere, on the floor, the walls, even on the celing (note: we have white walls and a mint green looking carpet). We never did that trick again.
P.S. I once knew someone who taught their dog to get into the fridge and get them things, but when the dog learned, they had to put a lock on the fridge door. So be careful what you show them.

Rock does know how to "bring me the remote" when we ask. Doug taught him that while I was gone training with A couple other dogs.
With the raw food kept in the bottom drawer of the fridge....I think bringing me anything out of there would take him a while. He would probably stop for a snack.

Anything my dog would be interested in (meat, cheese, etc.) is inaccessible in drawers or compartments within the fridge, and he has no kitchen access when I'm not home. It's all good
Years ago I had a dog that taught HERSELF to open the fridge, presumably by watching us. THAT was interesting.

My dog had several jobs.
First, he is an active member of my street's canine neighborhood watch. Anyone going by, coming to the door, walking their dogs, and he barks until the dead are awake.
He cleans up any and all food (or anything that approximates food) that falls onto the floor. Or is left unguarded.
He decorates all clothing with contrasting hairs. Dark clothing gets light colored hair, light clothing gets dark colored hair. He also deposits it on the floors.
He keeps cats and squirrels out of the yard. Also birds.
He follows people around the house with his favorite toy in his mouth and pokes them in the butt with it.
He cuddles with my wife on the couch, which she really appreciates during the winter.
