A lot of folks don't like bite-trained dogs for SAR
Ah. More things I didn't know before. At this rate I'm going to look like a complete idiot but learn a lot.

I do that every day.
This board and the LB site have probably taught me more than a lifetime of dogness has.
And I'm old.

You love to learn the taste of leather, cotton and toejam.
It's an aquired taste, but around here, you have ample opportunity to enjoy it.

I hope this isn't a hijack, I apologize in advance if it is, but how do you know if a dog has an aptitude for tracking? I know absolutely nothing at all about tracking and my dog is training for competition OB, but I've noticed that this dog gets absolutely obsessed when he gets on the trail of something (which usually ends up being my daughter, though I never know what it is until he finds it/her). He moves very fast with his nose glued to the ground, occasionally stopping to sniff the air(?) and then he's off on the ground again. As soon as he finds who or what he was looking for, he's done with the behavior. If he does this on leash he's an absolute freight train until I get his attention, which is difficult when he's on something this way. I haven't had another dog do this so tenaciously, so I wonder: Is this just a normal dog being a dog, or should I explore this behavior a little more?

You and your dogs are a team. Sounds like something he enjoys doing, is it something you'd enjoy doing?
No real should or shouldn't about what activities you explore with your dog, as long as it's fun and safe for everyone involved.

I don't think it's a hijack, since this is such an open-ended thread anyway...
It sounds like your dog would like to try his hand (paw, nose, whatever) at tracking. When he lifts his nose, that's called trailing.
You could try playing hide and go seek with him. Have someone else hold him while you run away and hide (hide in such a manner that he can't use his eyes to find you). It's fun for both handler and dog, and it's a good clue as to the dog's aptitude.
You could also try some basic scent pad training for fun.

I'm with Denise in saying that if you both like it, why not.....
I found out last year that one of my dogs and I both loved FST.
And my dog had nowhere near the inclination before we started that yours is demonstrating!

I'm pretty much good to go for whatever my dog would enjoy. He DOES seem quite pleased with himself when he's found what he's looking for
He found my daughter three miles away from home, hanging out with her friends. There were surprises all around

I think you've got yourself a SAR dog there.
