My older dog can be told "bedtime" at 11 PM, and remember to stay in his bed until released at 7 AM. I think I could probably tell Maggie "Quiet" when putting on the no-bark collar, and release her when I take it off. (Assuming I don't confuse her with other commands in-between.)
The other e-collar would be randomized and not associated with a command when put on?
Sheesh. The bark collar corrects for barking. The remote collar corrects for what you want it to. There is no association. I want my dogs to know that barking is not allowed when I put that bark collar on them. Period end of story. I don't care if they associate it with anything. I leave for work. You get the collar put on. Don't bark! Not much else to it. When I use the remote collar it's totally different. I put it on for training, hunting, walks etc. Hope this helps some of you.
I'm with Chris, I don't care what they know about any of the collars. Having said this, I think that most dogs are smart enough to know which is which mostly due to the circumstances they are in at the time. If not they will figure it out fairly quickly.

Exactly. I use both collars every day and there is no problem. I don't say a word or use any signal. The dogs figure it out in about a minute. I can't tell for sure how they know, but I don't think it really matters. It's most likely the context in which it's put on the dog.
There has never been any conflict evident in my dogs by using both, if anything it's made things more balanced.
Well, my friend's father has two hunting dogs. The dog that had to wear a bark collar when it was young, will not bark/bay while hunting if it has an e-collar on. This makes perfect sense to me as the e-collar and bark collar must feel the same to the dog.
I mean, *I* would know the difference between the collars as I'm putting them on the dog. But the goals are different. I would want the dog to know and understand that the bark collar is on and to mind the collar when it is on and he can bark when it is off. You want him collar-wise. But with an E-collar you would want the dog to mind you whether or not the collar is on. In other words, not be collar wise. But both collars look and feel similar.
However, I have seen videos of dogs doing Schutzhund (bark and hold) while wearing an e-collar and I wonder if those dogs also wear no-bark collars, and how they learned it is OK (in fact, good) to bark with an e-collar but not with a bark collar.
This is something I have always wondered about....
my dogs do bitework that involve a hold and bark exercise. They do this while wearing an ecollar and these same dogs may have JUST been wearing a bark collar in the crate or kennel.
most dogs learn the context in which the collar is being worn without a problem.
I use a tritronics bark limiter, http://leerburg.com/815.htm which is quite small. I'm pretty sure it feels very different to my dogs. it's a completely different weight & shape than the ecollar I use. http://leerburg.com/280ncp.htm
I don't know if I'm going to buy either right now. I think I have more on-lead obedience to do before moving to the remote collar. Although it might be nice to use it for "don't tackle your brother" and "don't chase the cat" training way before she's ready for formal obedience work with it, it doesn't seem as worth the price for that.
Although still rather noisy, Maggie has been much quieter at night since we changed her bedding. She sleeps more soundly now and therefore does not wake up lonely as often. We probably will still invest in the bark limiter if we can move as we'd like to.
