... How many people use it for corrections vs. stopping pulling?
Just to be on the same page, in what way does using it to stop the dog's pulling differ from using it for any other correction?
I mean, how are they two different things?

Connie, that's true. I was thinking of handler-administered corrections, thinking of a dog that didn't pull, but might be corrected for behaviour, for instance.

I'll remove myself here.
My own opinion of the term "self-correction" may too easily be mistaken for condemnation of prong collars, and it's not at all ... not in any way.
So, back to

i suppose, when you think about it, putting a dog in the prong-collar sort of removes the possibility of the dog correcting itself, b/c the collar is your choice.
i guess i was mostly wondering - who uses to control their dog and stop pulling, and who uses it for other reasons (the only other reasons i could think of were for handler-administered corrections, for lack of a better term). maybe there are other uses....john using it w/the dumbell, for example.

Both of my girls can walk very nicely on a flat or limited slip collar...however, when I walk them both at the same time (a daily thing) they both wear a prong. It gives me extra control of them in an emergency...like another dog running up to us or whatever. For the most part, I use verbal commands in other situations like seeing a rabbit or a cat darting past. Really the only time I give a correction is when we walk past the yapping little dogs down at the corner and my youngster bristles up on occasion (they are annoying, but that's not tolerated!)

i'm not using it at all now, but i do want to keep one around.
i was thinking about it too, we haven't been to FR in far too long, but most of the dogs there wear a prong, which on one hand kind of confuses me, b/c you're supposed to have good control over the dogs, right? they'll out off of the decoy on command....so i don't totally get the prong in FR.

I don't think any walking control tool really works in a self-correcting manner. A hard dog can learn to pull against a prong. I try to control every correction the dog gets from the prong, to be the right level of correction for that dog.
I had moved Maggie back down to a choke, using the prong only in distracting environments, but the squirrels are out in force right now and I need the prong for everyday use.

I use the prong for tracking, very little in OB and lately have used for walking. I usually walk in a Lupi harness that has worked very well for us and to come to think of it, I think I have to go back to that more.

I place a prong collar on my PitBull when I bike with her. She has very strong prey drive for small animal..squirrels esp. I mainly needed it when I was training her to jog next to the bike. Between the collar and bumping into the front tire once or twice, she "heels" next to he bike and responds to verbal cues to slow and turn.
Its a great way for her to burn up energy, and works for me too!
