Alyssa- how many hours a day do you think you spent learning Arabic? I was thinking of trying Rosetta stone for conversational Spanish. My bf's dad either does not speak English or refuses to speak english... not sure which (and for all intents and purposes I believe people should learn English if they immigrate from another country, but for a maybe future father-in-law...I want to make the extra effort)
Kathryn- cool! Another singer I'm a newbie in that field, too. The thing I realized about singing in German is that no matter how explosive I made my consonants, it seemed like there was always room for more, lol. The vowel variations took me a while to catch on to as well. If you've ever heard or done the Brahms piece "Ein Deutsches Requiem" I really enjoyed it and would recommend it.

Kathryn, that'd be great.. But.. Thats on the other side of the state . I did a google search too and didn't find anything that came up close to my area.
A 6 month subscription to Rosetta Stone online for levels 1, 2, and 3 is $300.
You can purchase levels 1-3 for I think $550 on their website, and I've seen $450 on Ebay for all levels. What’s your alls opinion on which would be better to buy?
Alyssa please do tell about how much time you spent on there learning a day. I'd like to try to take the level 1 test on Feb 13, and the level 2 test on March 13. Does this sound reasonable, or should I give myself more time?

I've already emailed them and am waiting for a response. I asked if they knew of any groups in my area or could give any software recommendations.
If I don't get any response from the email by next week, I'll be calling them .

Megan,
Have you ever noticed that correct German pronunciation results in a lot of saliva flying around? That's because the German language was invented solely for the purpose of allowing people to spit in each others faces while pretending to be engaged in polite conversation. So if you're going to attempt to learn German on your own don't neglect the spitting. Not that you have to worry that much about it. It is almost impossible to speak the language without spitting.

I'm being forced to take Rosetta Stone Spanish as part of my Air Command and Staff College curriculum. Fortunately, I've had 4 years of highschool spanish and some time in Latin America to give me a head start. I feel sorry for the poor saps that have to learn Arabic and Chinese. In my opinion, Rosetta Stone is not a very good program. Obviously, Alyssa's experience is different, but I'd feel pretty lost trying to figure out Rosetta Stone Spanish without the background I have already.
Just my opinion.

When I looked at the site it said $199.95 for a 6-month subscription and $299.95 for a 12-month subscription. If you want the audio companion (haven't looked to see what this is) it is an additional $50.

I never even thought to check eBay (maybe Amazon, too). If I could find it cheap enough, I might go that route. I always prefer to own the software ... for future reference, if nothing else.

Kurt, you might have mentioned you were one of them high muckity-muck types, lol.
I have an unfair advantage when learning new languages.
I learned German at the same time I learned English. I was born in Germany and lived there for 6 years.
If I'm around someone who is speaking German, I can remember most of it, I comprehend better than I speak, though.
Since I learned a second language so young, I guess my brain is predisposed to learn additional languages easier. The immersion method doesn't work as well for some folks. It seems easiest for me, though. I learned ASL and Arabic that way. (I think I've fogotten all my Arabic. The only stuff I remember is "Ibtaed, tera armee" and "Tech-taj Englizi". I'm in no hurry for a refresher course, if you catch my drift.)
