Think this happens at least once to most dog owners...my girl (who really never chewed anything at all EXCEPT one shoe and the leash in question lol) decided to chew her only leash in half while traveling in my grandparent's motorhome for the first time. I've learned since then and keep leashes all over the place now. This is also the trip that she came into heat at just shy of 6 months old...it was an "interesting" vacation!
Bob Scott posted about that once: He had that happen as he sat around a pool talking with other handlers, with his dog under his chair, after a seminar event.
The dog never took off or anything, but when they got up to go, he was no longer attached to the loop end of the leash. LOL!
That was my first Border Terrier, Rags. He was rarely ever on a leash but being in a public place I felt obligated.
With the hunting terriers we always had to tie them out with the plastic coated steel cables when another dog went to ground. Anything less and even the best dog wont stay cabled.
Rags just felt "obligated" to let me know that thing hanging off his neck had absolutely no functional purpose.
Lori,
Just so you don't feel so bad, my 5 month old just got my shoe and chewed on the heel. I was busy making myself some breakfast and I had forgotten to put my shoes in the closet!
Luckily, I got to him before he completely ruined it.
It happens to all of us sooner or later.
My Pits have done this to get loose from the very back of the SUV where they were hooked to the welded hook on the rear floorboard. Once I left Mia for literally 5 minutes, but she couldn't see me, so she cut the leash in half (I swear it looked like it had been cut w/scissors) and when I returned she was calmly sitting in the driver's seat w/about 10"of leash hanging from her collar. Simon did exactly the same thing for exactly the same reason.
It's ALWAYS the expensive, really super soft nice new leather ones. They love those. Mia had a thing for expensive leather. If my shoes were average to cheap, they were safe. If they were outrageous, they were victims. And she would go to great lengths to get them...not like I left them out.
