Hmmm. Makes me want to experiment with a puppy. Mine are all way too far along probably, in terms of being used to learning a behavior using all verbal commands/markers. I wonder if a dog who has never heard a clicker would show the same results??? From the article, it would stand to reason that the results would be the same, but I also wonder how consistent the verbal control group was in their verbal marker, ie, how identical the marker was each time in comparison to the 100% consistent clicker.

Totally anecdotal but....
I have seen amazing results with a clicker, it really seems to speed up the process like nothing I have ever seen or tried. Yote learned his basic puppy manners like sit and down in record time with it, and the behaviors seemed to stick much better.
I played the food shell game with Loki last night, this was the first time I had really tried to work on something new using a clicker with him.
He is usually a fairly slow learner when I use a verbal marker, needing well over a hundred repetitions are usually needed when teaching him something new, and he gets easily confused. (but I still love him LOL)
Using the clicker with him last night he picked up the rules in one short session and there was no confusion. I plan on using it to up his training and help build some confidence.

The clicker (just like a verbal marker) just has to be charged, or loaded, first.

Anecdotal, yes, but you are reinforced all over the place.

well it is always good to be reinforced!
I really was amazed how quickly Loki got the game, he usually shows some signs of mild anxiety when we are doing something new. Last night he was calm and happy and quick!!

I was thinking that, and that kind of led to my wondering about the study you posted and how consistent the group using verbal markers was. In theory, wouldn't a 100% consistent (timing, tone, word, etc.) marker work as well as a clicker?
I consider myself fairly coordinated, but that whole click- treat thing frustrates the bejeezus out of me.

Leash, treats, scent articles, orbee, tug...
I don't have room for a clicker.

I'm with you.
Doesn't mean I don't believe that the clicker is more efficient -- just means I'm not!

I could maybe hold the clicker in my mouth...
But then I can't spit treats to reinforce proper focus during OB.
What to do!?!
In reality, though, clicker vs verbal marker all comes down to personal preferance.

The study was posted in Karen Pryor's newsletter.
She has said what the study says for some time now.
In theory, yes, of course, I agree with what you wrote about a perfectly consistent sound with no intonations, etc. But is there such a thing? (Well, yes: a clicker. LOL!)
