She had her first sedative tonight.
She looks really awful with her droopy eyelids and drool. I think next time I will half the dose. We just want her to not get so worked up when my Dad comes home from work or when I come over to check on her.
Between the ace bandage and towel taped around her belly, the cone and now the droopy face she really is a sight.
But she is doing well over all.
Connie do you have any experience with Serum build up under an incision?
It looks like it might already be filling back up after getting it drained today. Meaning she might have to get a rose drain put in for a week or so, which would require nursing care and bandage changes.

Yes, I assume he meant Penrose after googling it, he just called it a rose drain.
I don't know what else he would mean since it is a surgical draining tube

I read some stuff about serum buildup last night (and some kinds of surgical closing methods that can help to minimize it but that are not always appropriate), and it seems to just come with the territory here. How is it today?

she looks like it is filling up again but she isn't leaking right now, she is wrapped in towel and ace bandage to try and keep some gentle pressure on it.
I guess we will keep and eye on her this afternoon, and if she needs to go back in and be drained again, or put a drain in for a while I can do that tomorrow.
Her hair is also falling out, maybe from the stress and anesthesia?

Is her hair falling out in spots or all over?

It is falling out all over, with more coming out on her chest and inner arms (not armpits)
Neither of which are places that she tends to lose hair even when she is having a flair up.
Generally it is above her hips and in her groin and armpit, I haven't ever seen her lose it on her chest before.
My mom is swifferng and using the vacuum twice a day right now to keep up with it and replacing her blankets twice a day because they are so covered in fur.

She seem to be about the same tonight, there is some swelling but no leakage right now.
We are keeping a close eye on her to see if she needs to go back in tomorrow. But if it all looks the same we will wait.
Plus the Vet is going to be at my parents house tomorrow night playing poker, so if anything is horribly amiss he will see it.

( Interesting vet you have there! )
I can't think of any reason for her to lose hair like she is except maybe stress (like you mentioned) or possibly the sedative you gave her has a odd reaction? What was the name of the sedative and how many doses has she been on? (I'm just curious. I doubt it was the sedative, and it is probably stress related, but I like researching drugs, interactions, reactions, etc, so I am nosy.)
(Since the vet is coming over to play poker, can you, they, let him win, get him in a really gregarious mood, and he can give her a complete exam for free?)
Look! I DO fit in the bag. |

I won't be there for the poker game, he is a friend of my dad's from high school, so they go way back.
I actually worked for him when I was in high school, and learned really quickly I didn't have it in me to be a vet, or even vet tech. I would go home and cry every night.
The hair loss started before the sedative, I don't know the name of it but it is the same thing she takes during bad thunderstorms and has never had a reaction to it. I did some research and it found some references to anesthesia causing hair loss, so that might be it.
She is actually leaking again today, so I think she will have to go back in the his afternoon or in the morning. I don't know what we will do if she has to have a drain put in, she might have to stay at the vet for a few days if so. Because of her deep chest and skinny waist bandages don't stay on the area very well.
Poor girl. I just want her to heal up and no keep having problems.
