... I can get the frontline no problem but it is required to get a yearly heartworm test for heartguard.
Administration of some of the heartworm "prevention" meds (I don't remember which ones) to a dog already infected can cause fatal shock.
Also, monthly heartworm meds purchased from the vet are guaranteed by the manufacturer (the guarantee involves payment for treatment if the owner has been buying the product every month and the dog still becomes infected*), and that means the dog has to be uninfected at the beginning.
My vet (and other vets of the folks in my training club, it tuned out in a discussion one day) will match any internet cost for heartworm meds if I take in the printout. They don't have a big sign about it ( ), but they do it.

A required yearly HWT is really not uncommon, at least around here. I was under the impression that all HWP is not the same, and some (when given to a dog with heartworms) can have serious medical consequences. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong here...
I know she does not have heartworms she has been on the meds from day one.
But yes dogs that have not been on it from day one should be tested.
The low cost clinic is to much right now.
And the humaine society out here cost more then my low cost clinic. And my Hspca does not have a open clinic. At least there website does not say so.
I do have to be careful with what phoenix gets as she has colley in her.

Can you ask your Vet to take a payment you can afford for a certain amount of months. Vets usually own their own business and can make arrangements in a hardship situation. Since you have a relationship with your Vet, I bet if you explained your situation to him/her they will work with you. I can't see why they wouldn't take a payment for the test, it is not that much for them to carry. As a business person, I would do that for my client who is having a hardship.
I have ordered both Frontline & heartworm meds from Pets Megastore in Australia since '03 with no problems. I just bought 6 months of XL Frontline Plus tubes, 6 months of small Canimax and 6 months of large Canimax for about $80 total.
At 4 months I start my dogs on heartworm and keep them on it year round (we live on the Gulf Coast). There's nothing wrong with the medicine from Australia.
I would say that in a pinch (which you are in), medicine from Australia is better than no medicine at all. Just make sure it is exactly the right thing since she does have the collie in her.
My vet will sell the dose I ask for. I can buy one box of Heartguard which is 6 months supply. I know there is one you apply to the skin, forget what it's called, Frontline plus I think, where it treats fleas, ticks, heartworms, and roundworms or something. Those you can buy just one month at a time. That might be more financially feasible for you, and might not need a test.???

Your vet can sell you any HWP one dose at a time...we did that all the time. They can certainly make payment arrangements...we also did that often.
If the practice has a practice manager, try talking to him or her, as well as the owner/vet. That is their job and they should be willing and able to help you out.
Many vets will offer a HW blood test waiver for owners to sign so you might want to ask if your vet will provide you with one.
