Hey guys! I was inquiring about raw in the feeding puppies forum. I have a thirteen week boxer female named Gabbie. I have read a lot on this site and need to get a book about it.
What I did read was that it is good to feed ground turkey first with kibble to get her aquired. I am not sure about how much for a puppy though. Any starting advice would be appreciated.
Keeping reading all you can about feeding raw. Everyone I know that feed raw usually never go back to kibble again.
Leerburg has excellent books to read before you get started.
One thing though, kibble and raw digest at different rates and there for it is not recommended to feed together.
When I switched to raw, I chose to go "cold turkey" and made the switch immediately.
If you want, you can get your feet wet with the premade raw, like Nature's Variety patties to get started, as they have done all the mix for you in one easy patty.
Then when you feel more confident, you can use the same formula like the samples that LB gives you on their feeding suggestions.
Also, if you feed raw meat, you need to have it with raw meaty bones as well, because of the calcium/phospherous ratios.
Just keep reading, and check on the whole section on Leerburg about feeding dogs, it has most all your questions answered.
It is the best thing you can give your dog, just my honest opinion, you won't regret it. Good luck to you!
Shawn, I started mine on ground turkey, but no kibble, just to get her used to the texture and taste of raw. It was only a few days until she realized it was food. GOOD food. And then, Katie bar the door, she was ready for anything.
She ate so very little while on kibble that I worried about her growing well. The kibble just sadly laid in the dish.
When she got her first chicken with bone, she ate it like she had never been fed before.

I have done this often, too, with an adult or senior used to a lifetime on kibble.
Not for long, though! A couple of days should be all that's needed (if that), and beyond that, the calcium must be restored to the diet (the digestible bones).
