So.... the consensus is, I can store the salmon oil in the fridge and that should help prevent it from going bad?
Yes. MHO is that I recommend it unless you are going through it very fast, and I think it's necessary no matter how fast you use it if it's a screw-top (as opposed to a pump; the pump makes a difference by helping to keep air out).

The problems with capsules are mainly:
1) finding capsules with a high enough dosage. You end up having to give 10+ pills.
2) You cannot check for rancidity. They keep longer (store out of sunlight), but if they do go, you'll never know, because you cannot smell it as easily.
3) Is it body oil, or liver oil? You are also giving mixed tocopherols, yes?
1. I have noticed this... :-)
2. Never thought of this. They are stored in a pantry (dark) but I've never bit into one and sniffed... LOL!
3. At the risk of hearing everyone GROAN, I'll be honest and say I don't know. I'll run down and check in a minute. Alyssa, I've learned a lot from you, and today I learned to-co-pher-ols. Since I don't know what type of fish oil I'm giving, it is now safe to assume I'm not doing this either.
I HAVE ordered three books on feeding raw, have read one of them three times waiting for the other two to arrive.
The fish oil says it is from "deep ocean fish; anchovy, bonito and sardine - not farm raised" but I don't see any mention of liver vs body.

Connie,
We give our dog fish oil capsules... are these as effective as the liquid?
Thanks!
Alyssa answered this perfectly on all counts. The only reason I am adding to it is that I see by the picture of your dog that capsules are too small of a dose.
There are members here with 10- or 20-pound dogs who use capsules (being careful to use a good brand and to pierce one first to check for rancidity, because yes, indeed, gelcaps can hide a multitude of sins), because their dogs might need only one or two capsules a day. Beyond that, the use of capsules gets progressively spendy, if a dog needs 5 to 10 a day.

Liver oil is clearly marked right on the front label. Example: Cod Liver Oil.
Are you giving some form of Vitamin E with it? IMO, the desirability is as follows, high to low: Natural E with Mixed Tocopherols; d-Alpha; dl-Alpha.

There is no mention of Cod Liver Oil (or any liver oil). Is this what I should be using? And right now, no, I'm not using Vitamin E with Tocopherols but will do so. :-)

Good, and good. Yes, non-liver oil is what you should be using. (JMO.)
"Mixed" tocopherols. That means not just alpha, but also gamma and delta, etc., tocopherols.

Interesting. I'm glad this came up.
My bottle of Vitamin E is actually labelled as both. On the front it says Mixed Vitamin E 200 IU Natural Source.
On the side it says Each Softgel Contains: 200 IU of pure vitamin E in the form of d-alpha tocopherol, derived and isolated from 100% natural sources.
So..... it's not mixed? This whole time I thought it was. It definitely says mixed on the front.

Ooooh, no, I wouldn't, except for oil-types. Unless I had bulk vitamins in unopened packages, I'd be far more likely to store them in the coolest darkest driest part of the house, which in general means not the kitchen or bathroom, and not the 'fridge either (for reasons of humidity). Out of the fridge it is. Thank you!

So I can definitely see the importance of supplementing vitamin E, especially when using fish oil, and I feel mixed tocopherols are the way to go.
Do you also supplement the tocotrienols? I was thinking a natural vitamin E with a complete tocotrienol profile might be a good thing to add once or twice a week to complement the tocopherols.
So..... it's not mixed? This whole time I thought it was. It definitely says mixed on the front.
It will usually be listed on the label something like this...
Vitamin E (as d-alpha tocopherol) 200IU 670% Daily Value
Mixed tocopherols (Beta, Delta, Gamma) 5 mg * No Daily Value
Many upper end products will have significantly higher tocopherol levels. I have one in front of me that has 432 mg of mixed tocopherols (beta, delta, gamma) to 400 IU natural vit E.
