I currently feed twice a day. I think am going to go with feeding her three times a day and start with smaller portions and build from there, assuming it goes well. She will be done with the metronidazole in 6 days.
Can anyone comment on the use of probiotics? I have noticed that if I use them to frequently, my dog does not go to the bathroom sometimes for two or three days. Is that normal? Is she just absorbing the food and that is why she does not need to go to the bathroom?
I give her a tablet that is 10 billion CFU usually once a day.
My 7 mo old GSD had giardia about 6 weeks ago and had terrible diarrhea for several weeks. She was on metronidazole for 10 days and her stools were solid for the first two days on the medication, but went back to pudding diarrhea the last 8 days of medication.
We also tried giving two spoonfuls of pumpkie puree daily which helped slightly, but what really helped was when we started feeding her yogurt again, a couple large spoonfuls once a day. We also made sure she drank lots of fresh water (she loves drinking it out of the hose, so we made sure she got extra by just getting the hose out at least twice a day) and refreshened her water bowl several times a day.
She also lost weight during the diarrhea and has finally started to gain it back within this past week, it just took some time for us.
Looks like you're doing all this already, hope your pup gets well soon!
Ok... so you guys are never going to believe this. After a week of solid stools the diarrhea came back. Last night it was liquid again. This afternoon my dog passed a small piece of a fuzzy toy she used to have.
Now... almost THREE MONTHS AGO, I found this fuzzy toy partially eaten. I did not think anything of it because she was having normal stools at that time (pre surgery), no vomiting, acting totally normal, running with the 4-wheeler, training, hiking, etc. etc. Even after her surgery she had some solid stools on and off.
I am absolutely shocked that this piece of toy could remain in her system for this long and now the double dose of antibiotic is probably only made it worse.
I worry that there can be more of this in her. I am going to call the vet tomorrow. Can anyone tell me what the normal procedure is? I don't want to assume that when she has a solid stool that there is no more toy in her belly because she has had solid stools between the time the toy went missing and today.
Will the vet do an x-ray? Operate? Is there medication to move possible objects out? Help...
Amanda, I don't have any advice. I saw your post and read this thread and wanted to assure you that the experienced people will see it and offer some advice.
Hang in there. The vet will probably do a soft tissue x-ray and some sort of laxative type drug, I would assume.
I am newish to dogs so don't have a ton of knowledge but when I was into horses, I swore by Fastrack pribiotics. There was a marked difference in coat and food use when my horses were on it. My horse vet told me that for whatever reason, it seemed to work better than Probios or other probiotics on the market. They have a canine version and I am getting ready to order some because I am switching my dog to raw in about 2 weeks and I am having a hard time finding any plain yogurt except fat free.
Fastrack has nothing in it nutrient-wise to alter the diet to so no reactions or balance issues.
You cant find it in stores, you have to find an independent rep that sells it or you can order and have it shipped (small container). http://www.conklin.com/catalog/prod_info.asp?prfID=737
this link is to the product but there's a link to find a rep. Im sure if you google it you can find a place to order online if you wanna give it a whirl.
Best of Luck
