I got my first no-bag vacuum cleaner this year and I am thrilled; I'll probably never go back to a bag type. It's a fairly cheap (new) Hoover, but I love it so far (after several months). I keep the dirt cup very empty and the filter screen cleaned off, per one of the online reviews. I also do the emptying outdoors, straight into the trash and right to the barrel.
Which Hoover did you get? I looked at Walmart. They have several of the Windtunnel variety. My last one was a Hoover Windtunnel V2. The belt broke on it and in my quest to DYI the belt, it sort of fell apart! The brushes came off and I cant figure out how to put them back on and I still havent even figured out how to get to the broken belt!
The vacuum cleaner place was going to charge me about 170 just to clean it! I cant see doing that since I dont even think I paid that much for it new!
Either way I have come to the conclusion that I need something with much better suction, No bag ( for the reasons you mentioned)and one that works as well on wood as carpet.

I got a Hoover Empower. First you want to Google this: Hoover Empower reviews (which I did), to see if the "cons" are important to you. For example, it's loud. (For under $100 new, I can live with loud, but I know loud would be a problem to many.) There are a couple of inconvenience factors, but this was for a vacuum cleaner for just one big room, pretty much, and the cons just weren't important to me because the reviews said it worked well, and it was definitely way cheap.
I know that much of the enthusiasm we have for a new one is based on comparison with the old one, which may be pretty much dead. In fact, I saw this too: My old Panasonic bag-type was good when it was new. But the day this bagless Empower came, I had done the whole living room with the old one, and the new one still picked up a FULL dirt-cup of dust and fur.
For the price, I feel quite satisfied with it, still. I keep the dirt-cup empty and keep that filter-screen clean, as advised, and it works waaaay better.
I picked up a reconditioned Eureka Capture a while back at Big Lots for $60 'cuz I needed something with a hard floor setting. I thought it might be a waste of money but it's way better than the one I replaced. I've always used my air compressor to frequently blow out the innards, filters, hoses, etc., and that seems to make a world of difference. I can extend filter life by 3x or 4x.
I researched many of the vacuums mentioned here. I have to admit I had to pass on a Dyson, Oreck and Kirby for economic reasons. I was getting kind of depressed just realizing that I couldnt afford an expensive vacuum at this time and had resolved myself to the fact that I was destined to have a cheaper one that would lead to a life of hairy and dusty carpets but alas...
Mike came to the rescue!!! ( Thanks Mike) I went to the local Big Lots and picked up a Reconditioned Bissell All Floor Velocity!( 60 bucks, retails for 189.00) OMGosh...I couldnt believe how much yucky stuff was in my carpet! I actually emptied out the vacuum cup 7 times and it was chock full of dog hair, dust, dog dander and lots of other unidentifable gross stuff!
Thanks again to everyone who shared their vacuum experiences. Helped me alot!
I have a Dyson Animal and I absolutely love it. I got it when we only had the cat and my rambunctious 2 year old son. However, I got a refurb'd from ABC Vacuum Warehouse and all the attachments I wanted for less than a new one. Also has a 3 year warranty and Dyson customer service has been great, even when my belt broke as I was trying to get out something it shouldn't have sucked up.
