Me-Since we like to try everything I talked to one of the handlers commenting that my 80lb Great Dane cross might be a candidate. When I actually imagined handling a 3ft tall dog(we are in on leash obdience classes) who appears to be "guardy" I raised Labs before her,She was a year old when we found her, she is very differerent and I am still not 100% sure of her.
Others- Handlers and trainers watching didn't like the rough handling as they percieved it. To me it looked like stern reenforcement but not out of hand. Not that you'd convert hardcore "postivity" (?) but explaining establishing leadership would get to most people.
Tell me if I'm wrong but this is a much more serious activity where someone could get hurt. I've been bitten when a dog went for a bird or bumper in my hand but that's that worst that ever happened in field training and I knew how to quickly and meanfully correct the dog. And maybe that is the point to the "do not try this at home" disclaimer if you are not trained. This group did not address the serious side.
They started with a Corgie, which was pretty funny really. Then demoed puppy training, moved older dogs then an impressive demo with a titled GSD. I forget the commands but the dog held the guy with warning barks, on command grabbed his arm, back to holding him on command and the response was instant. The crowd was 3 deep watching. Still I didn't hear anything about not trying this at home.
Then again,it's the State Fair and there are a lot of yahoos.
"Meet the dogs" would be great. We have another fair coming up this weekend with Military and the same club back so maybe I can question them more then. The Military and Police demos always have a "meet the dog" for PR.
