yes, he is definitely too thin. his hip bones shouldn't be obvious like they are, and i'm willing to bet his spine is very obvious as well.
what you'll be looking for at an ideal weight is the ability to see only his last 3 ribs when the light is right, you should be able to feel them easily too. way too thin, IMO.
Surprisingly enough- his back is pretty rounded. You can only see one vertebrae bump that's where his back end starts to roll down. But yeah, his back end is bony and you can see more than 3 ribs.
We have always danced a fine line with his eating. Read through the old post "4 weeks of pudding" to see what we went through. Ever since, I've kept his portions tightly controlled because that was the only way to keep his poo solid. Now that he's on THK, I want to see him round out more. BUT- like I said, I need to be careful or its back to Diarrhea-Town.
So that's where we are- The best way to increase weight gently.
I gave him a skinned (fat removed) drumstick as a third meal yesterday. His poop was still normal today so I'm going to try a leg quarter (minus fat and skin)on him later on. If that sits well I'll buy a couple of whole chickens and start chopping them up. I've got a package of quarters left in my freezer.
We'll see what happens. My husband thinks I'm insane for all the time and money I'm dumping into this. I'm the only one on team RAW at the moment : ( It sucks.
i thought he was a pup w/digestive issues. i agree, go slow and easy; once you find the right feeding protocol, you should be able to build him back up fairly quickly.
please continue to post pics--it's always great to see the improvement. and it sounds like "so far, so good"
The leg quarters are going really well! This is a big relief. So we are up to 2 cups of Embark + 1 leg quarter per day. A few more days like this and I will start leaving LITTLE pieces of the skin/fat on.
jessica, i don't feed raw (tho someday i will), but, IMO, yes. first be sure he's tolerating the change well, then start leaving the fat/skin on just as you said--the fat/skin, if he tolerates THAT ok, will put the much-needed weight back on, and that, in turn will allow him to grow normally.
