I'm certainly not trying to diagnose on the 'net (and I'm not a health professional anyway), but when you added retching, then the other behaviors you described, for me, at least, suddenly fell into the group of symptoms that can mean bloat.

Whew! is right.
Unproductive retching is never something to watch and wait, IMO. This was coupled with restlessness, pacing, and so on, and I'd have had the dog in the car and on the way to the hospital just as fast as the O.P. did.
I mentioned chronic gastric volvulus to the O.P. (I'd want to identify or rule out bloat asap, spontaneously resolution notwithstanding.)
Not to hijack but I had a similar experience. My min pin did this once last year. She had gotten into a bag of sea salt mix for our marine aquariums. She started pacing around the house, biting and licking at the floor while making what we affectionately refer to as "puke-face" (when they turn up the corners of their mouth and look like their eyes are going to pop out). She started biting at the carpet frantically and trying to eat anything on the floor. My husband let her outside because he thought she had to vomit. She just started eating grass like a starved cow. A couple minutes later she was able to vomit. She probably ate grass and vomited for a good 5 minutes before she settled down and snapped out of it. Very scarey.
We had the same problem. She started eating paper, Leaves, cloth and whatever came in her way. This happened twice in 2010. Were you able to trace what the problem was? Please let me know if you get the answer.
