I got the space but the county won't let us have chickens, my daughter wants LLamas, don't think we're zoned for that either
At least you are zoned for working line GSD's... It could be worse. Erika is so awesome.

The last 25 bantys my Grandma and I ordered had 50 extra chicks in the box.
I guess as feeders of raw meat to our dogs, this should be a good thing, but still!!! Fifty extra little mouths to feed??? LOL!
Sounds awesome. They're only extra until they make fryer weight LOL

You got that right, but feed isn't cheap (or "cheep!" in this case) and raising 50 to slaughter weight, unexpected... wow. I can't imagine housing 50 unexpected birds - that is what gets me! How do you house and raise 50 birds you weren't planning on???

Our chickens were free range with a little feed every now and then, so they fed themselves for the most part. Thanks to them, we had a 2 acre patch of thick woods the was completely tick free.

Now THAT is a sweet set up... free ranging birds without the worry of dogs eating said birds! I would LOVE to let my hens and roo free range!

At one time we had at least 200 banty chickens.
We had a large covered pin that they could go in during nasty weather.
But when left to their own devices they prefered to fill the trees at night.
There were a couple large trees that had really low branches they could get to. They would fly to the lowest and then go branch to branch up to the top.
I always loved watching the parade of chickens heading to roost just before dark.

I'm considering letting my guys range for about an hour or so before dusk... just give them a little time outside the pen before time to roost. I'll lock the dogs up and let my neighbor who occassionally walks over with her dog know, and see how things go. I know they will be a bit more vulnerable outside the yard, but gosh, I know they will sooo love digging and rootin' around.

Dogs were never a problem with ours. Any dogs that bothered us were spotted quickly by the chickens, who would then go full on alarm. Then we could shoo the dog or cat off.
Hawks and owls gave us the most problems, but still weren't too bad.
We only lost about 10 in a 20 year period.
