I have had several dogs here that pee on the back of their legs, and when they did lift their leg, it was all over their chest, belly coat! My little female does mark, funniest thing, she lifts so high that she actually loses footing! I have observed that the dogs peeing on legs, chest, all have similar body proportions, whatever, it's annoying having to wash it off all the time!
Same thing here Carolyn. Maximus is just over 5mths.
Could you share why you are waiting to neuter him when he is full grown?
Julie
for the muscular and skeletal development as well as mental maturity. Dogs need to have all the hormones at the right time to properly develop and health. Vets push spay and neuter because it's easier and fast cash. Humane Societies push early spay/neuter because frankly most people can not completely contain or control their pets
With my boy sometimes it's about emptying the bladder fast, and in that case he doesn't worry about lifting his leg. The rest of the time it's marking every blade of grass and every twig of every shrub. All with leg hiked. He loves ornamental grasses. Sometimes he'll write his name on them.
Ted didn't start lifting his leg until I got Flash who marks everything (with precision aim I might add lol). Now if he is "marking" he lifts his leg, but if he is just going potty he squats. He too hits the back of his paw and then follows by licking it off after the walk.
Bella started lifting to mark bushes now. It is quite funny (although my girlfriend doesn't think so) to see her basically step on a bush and hike her leg up. She only does that to mark as well. All three were neutered prior to my rescuing them. I think leg lifting has to do with hormones, but can also be a learned behavior, as seen with my two.
If you really want this behavior, I suggest as others do and find a neighbor dog who lifts to mark, your dog will probably follow suit quickly. Bella took awhile, but Ted picked up on it the same day.
Thanks to all of you for your interesting and funny stories. Now I feel much better even if he never lifts his leg. This is my 8th male dog. All of my previous dogs, 2 German Shepherds, Lab, 2 Beagles, Malamute, Schipperke all lifted their legs. I know it's still early so I just have to be patient.
