That is a good point. I had to do that with my three terriors Bindi, Cody, and Terra. It had started with Cody who can't sit still. Every time he laid down or sat down for just one minute, I would say "good rest", and then give him a treat. Now I can say to my dogs, rest, or no play, rest and they will go and lay down. My dogs are very active and do not even sleep during the day unless I put them in their crates. Of course they are young and probably will mellow with age. But anyway, it worked well with me. Now when I see my dogs "resting" I give them affection and they love it. that training has helped me when I have the three of them wrestling and running at top speeds through the house for hours on end. Now they will rest upon command.
Praise and affection can go along way if timed correctly.

Don't forget, every day is a new day for the dog. He's always looking (learning) for a way to belong and fit into your world. So make sure you always let him know when he's doing/done good. We have a tendency to forget those little everyday things that mean so much for the dog.
There is SERIOUS wisdom in this quote, and it doesn't just apply to dogs. Try it with your spouse, boss, co-worker, kids. You'll see that this concept is extremely powerful.
I truly believe that long-term application of this principle makes us better humans. It changes your world when you are constantly looking for and reinforcing things that others are doing right, rather than correcting wrongs.
The "every day is a new day" is powerful as well. Reminds me of one of my favorite Ralph Waldo Emerson quotes:
Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could. Some blunders and absurdities no doubt crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day; begin it well and serenely..

.... One of the things we human do is we seem to have a tendency to center our attention of rewards during 'training' time only. The rest of the day we focus more on correction of unwanted behavior. .... What we tend to forget or take for granted is all the things the dog does right and good throughout the day. With no praise or feed back from us. We kinda go, (shrug) well that's what he's suppose to do.
Huge huge point that can make training a whole new thing! I remember when I read that point once, I had a big mental seismic shift that affects my dog relationships profoundly.
The point isn't made very often, either, except as the inverse (that unrewarded behavior will be extinguished). I certainly appreciate the reminder!

Calmness, that is what I am looking for Melissa. Yes he is only four months and a week today. so yes he is mouthy and love to have His mouth full, so yes, I do the toy thing. Since I post I have had much success just by calming him down, and myself not to expect perfection 100% of the time. Mia Culpa, Handlers mistake. Dan

Hi Randy, You are correct in acknowledging that the whole day is opportunity to train and praise. not just correction, very good reminder.
Communication is what we do to each other, and our pets, they do the same to us, So a big part of the is me bending down to put on the leash, ( with a bad back) maybe I am not in the most accommodating place mentally at some time. So I got to find a fix. write a post "cause I am mad" When all it took was some rub, as you mention and some words, wen the mouth goes on my hand, I just try to leash faster and off we go.
Chico is a very good dog, when I become a very good handler we will meet. Dan

I'd be so bummed out if my 4 month old pup was calm. I have a 5 month old here, calm is just not going to happen for awhile
