I'd suck it up, and do, deal with what ever crate that can be depended on to contain the dog under all but the most extreme circumstances.
I wouldn't feel my dogs safety and well being is worth playing around with what amounts to not much more than a paper bag.
Someone gave me one of these (supports in the sides) free with a metal crate I picked up on craigslist...figured I'd give it a try since my dog is not crate destructive....
no matter what I did he unzipped it, when I clipped the zipper he "unzipped" the whole zipper off the crate (very neatly actually)...he didn't even leave the crate, just wanted a door open...I think for the car and travel it would be fine though (I wouldn't trust it where it has to hold up to distraction though...however for your own sanity try to find one with reenforced zippers that lock...

And, that's the thing, Jamie...it all depends on your dog.
I like to have a travel crate for staying in hotels and motels and camping, tho I use a regular one in the vehicle. They're just so much easier to cart and move around, especially when you're a major gimp .
That's why I'm pretty excited about the hard-sided travel crate...learned my lesson well about soft-sided crates and too-young dogs .
The problem I am having with finding a hard sided travel crate is that I need it at least 31" in height. I can find easily portable soft sided in 31+" but not in anything that folds down and is a hard crate that doesn't weight a ton. I have to walk my crate about 50 yards each way and its a pain doing it 2-3 times a week, hence, why I am looking for a soft sided or portable crate that will fit their height.
