He can let her take a toy because he knows he can get it again any time. I hated living with fighting dogs, so much tension in the house, had to watch them all the time. Aimee - yes - "wearing the big guy out" is the key to so much with him!!! I think you hit on something. It is when he's 'amped up' that he plays so roughly. Once he works out some of that initial energy, he seems alot more able to tone down the intensity when he needs to. It's amazing how he does make adjustments to keep the other dog engaged. It's like he's saying "Ok, you chew on me for awhile - just don't quit playing!" The challenge that we are facing in the summer is that it's so blasted hot outside in the middle of the day, it's not really safe for any of us to exert too much. Hmmm, canal nearby, long rope, harness, maybe a mile swim (except the water is pretty knacky, not sure I want him in it.) The dogs are in their crates lounging in the A/C during the heat of the day (spoiled mutts). A dog has alot of friends because he wags his tail instead of his mouth. - Charlie Daniels

I think that there can be varying degrees of play and it is up to the owner to make sure that no aggressive or overly dominant behavior happens. As with my two dogs, I have made sure that they have learned to play nice or the play ceases. They have learned what is not tolerated. In my situation, mine get along and have learned to play nicely. However, some dogs just don't get a long and in those cases, they should never be allowed to play together. Alec Garrison Webboard User Reg: 12-11-2007 Posts: 153 Loc: Long Island, NY Offline	These are very high energy dogs and while I do an excellent job of keeping them exercised and stimulated they are still going to find ways to burn off some energy. Also because they are so comfortable together it only takes a sly look from one to the other to get them going. I agree that its important to supervise them during this play. The discussion is all about being in control and the way we stay in control. When there is nobody home my dogs are crated for exactly that reason. I cant chance that play could turn ugly when they are unsupervised. I adopted these dogs. Their fate was not good until I came along. They are Pit Mixes that look much more like Pits than anything else. My male Jeter was a little skiddish when I first saw him at the shelter and if not for me deciding to take on the challenge his future was bleak. Today he is a happy healthy pet with a large (family) pack. Him playing rough with Dakota and me being able to allow it and control it with simple commands is good pack leadership in my opinion.
