You don't have to preach your aunt about dog training, but you could invite her over for lunch and show off how well behave your dog is. So if she has a problem with her dog again, she might ask you for a dog advice.
"It's better to be an optimist who is sometimes wrong than a pessimist who is always right"
She already knows how well my dog behaves but I understand what you're saying, lead by example. You can't just scold someone in their own home for how they deal with their dog. I would've tried to say something if I had gotten a moment with her in private, but if I had just embarrassed her about it, anything I would've said after that would've lost its luster. It's sort of a hopeless scenario, I disagree with it, but there isn't a lot that can be done. Also, reporting abuse, on just that, would not have created a very good scenario.

Amen. While I usually fret aloud about the people I see who use *no* corrections, the segment who abuse (even with good intentions) cause me to lose the most sleep.
I think it is important to keep in mind that people who do these things very often have no idea that what they are doing is abusive. Most of the time what they are doing comes from the perspective of the owner thinking that the dog has the capacity to reason.
My friend that I spoke of is a classic dog lover. She had no idea that she was being unfair, she saw it as her being a mom to her dog. She loved him more than anything in the world. He died over a year and a half ago, and she still grieves him.
I think its better to take the stance of education if you choose to confront people who make these kind of mistakes. Explain what works better and why.
