Turnpike one time, and the car ahead of me stopped suddenly, their Collie flew out the window and was run over, several times...not a vision you forget! I have a kennel gaurd in the back of my SUV, mounts & locks into place.

There was someone here a few years back that had posted letting her GSD stand up & stick his head out the window while she was driving. She went around a bend or turn & the dog fell out of the car window. Obviously, he was not even teathered. Fortunately, he fell onto the side of the road & not into traffic, didn't panic & run & was unharmed. Lucky dog, not so smart owner. A loose dog in the car in a suddon stop or accident will be a projectile (even with the window closed) & could be thrown thru the windshield or into the dash & sustain serious if not life threatening injuries. It is not to say that in an acciddent they can't sustain injury in a crate, but I will take my chances with that. MY DOGS...MY RULES

It's the kind of thing that nobody thinks is going to happen until it does. This has happened to at least two people I know. One was a boxer who went after a squirrel, the other a pit bull who went after another dog. One thing that really steams me is when I see people with dogs in the back of pickup trucks. It just seems so risky to me. I heard a horrible story about a dog who was leashed in the back of the truck and jumped out. The poor thing was hanged and dragged to death before his owner even realized what was going on.

Back seat was removed & a platform built to fasten the crates on. I like that they are in the middle of the truck & not in the rear area, so they are safer from a rear end accident. I won't put then in the bed of the truck even with a cap. Also loose crates can be tossed around in the vehicle in an accident or suddon stop & should be secured in the vehicle. MY DOGS...MY RULES

I have never, and will never completely open a window on the dog side of the car...that and doors are always locked (accidental paw slip...door opens...disaster...I've seen that too *shiver*). One of my biggest peeves is those folks who drive with their dogs on their laps, with the dogs hanging out the window and barking. It's not just dangerous but obnoxious. I've seen a lot of it lately. I also don't get the folks with the ginormous SUVs who give their dogs free run of the huge space in the back. In a car, I pretty much feel like if it isn't safe for a child, it probably isn't safe for a dog. That means secured a dog with his/her parts inside the car.

I really never ride with my windows down thou. I either have the heat on, or the ac on. LOL. Because of that I have really never thought to much about the health problems involved. But, there have been some great points made in this thread. That being said. I want to get a Harley and get a side car for it. Then get my dog a Red Barron helmet and goggles, train him to wear them, strap him in, and cruse around town. LOL That would be epic. Okay, so saying stuff like that out loud makes me feel like I might have slight problems. Lol.
