The game of tug can be an ultimate reward for many dogs.
The only thing I will add is it's actually the GAME of tug that should be the reward not the tug itself.
Unless you have a natural retriever and the dog "wins" the tug it has it's reward. You have lost your value to the dog.
It needs to learn that you are the source of the reward GAME and not the object itself.
The Ellis DVD is as good as it gets!
I have shelves full of books, video, DVDs, etc. Some books probably older then most of you.
Michael Ellis, hands down, explains his ideas and methods better then anything/anybody I have ever seen!
That includes Flinks, Balabanov, and anything else.
Thanks Ana for the video and Bob for the ideas as well. Ellis is the best I've seen in my limited training travels, so it's glad to hear that an accomplished dog person feels the same way.
I relish the thought of transitioning to the tug with this guy - now that I'm able to get past the thought of him being a 'rescue dog' trained for 'companion only' we'll get on with business.
Oh, and I found the cure for pulling on the leash on a walk, btw. Take'em on a 3 mile bikeride FIRST!
A dog has alot of friends because he wags his tail instead of his mouth.
The thing about playing tug is...never let him win. You always have to win. This keeps you in a pack leader role.
THAT is the last piece I needed. Thanks Alec!
No it's not. Thats the piece you overlook. Lol,Just kidding Alec. You want to do like Bob pointed out, that the dog looks to play the game with you.You winning, or taking it away all the time is going to make him not want to. He'll probably want to keep it away from you. I'm not sure how it is taught in the ME dvd, but I tug, let him have it,tug, let him have it, with a kind of rhythm. Moving around and encouraging him to come to me each time to continue the game.
I was taught that in order to make sure that the dog recognizes you as the dominant one you must always win. Was it bad advice? I don't train my dog to improve his bite or anything like that. I play tug with him because he likes it.
