But I think that when you enter that dog park, you surrender the right to keep other dogs from making contact with your dog at the gate. I really can't see how shooting the other dog can be justified in this case.

I agree 100%. In my yard, a stray dog attacks me or mine, that would be a different story, but in a public dog park EVERYONE assumes responsibility when they enter, and goes in knowing there is the risk of a dog fight or a person getting bitten. I believe the man was way out of line. The only good thing in my mind is he at least hit his intended target and not a person.
I agree with Steve. Dog parks fall under the same category as Chuckie Cheese in my opinion. You know they're gonna be running wild, and if you don't want yours exposed to it, don't go.

Until Steve posted "In a fenced in, off leash dog park?", I had a reaction like Aaron's.
Just another fine example of our justice system at work.
Come live in America. Home of the free-Land of the Marshall law since 1776.
That would be "Martial" law. Which most ppl define as " The imposition of military rule by military authorities over designated regions on an emergency basis"
Let's try to keep politics out of this.
The slob had a number of options he could of used before he shot the other dog. As the OP pointed out that's why you'll never see me in a dog park.

Odds are the GSD's owner didn't wake up in the morning and decide to go shoot his neighbor's dog for kicks.
Everyone had a role to play in this mess. If I had a husky redirect on me as MSNBC reported this dog did while breaking up a dog fight I might have shot the dog too. I'm not sure how long you guys think a dog fight needs to come to a serious conclusion but certainly shorter than it takes to find a stick.
The guy did show poor judgment by showing up to a dog park and not expecting to see the worst of the worst of canine behavior as a norm, but the owner of the dog has the responsibility to protect his pet. In my eyes the shooter did that where the other guy failed his pet by not controlling it in a public place, dog park or not.
