The first year of my dog's life I couldn't even get her to get her feet wet. We played alot with the hose in the backyard and finally as a 2 year old she discovered that she loved to play in other water but she only stayed in the shallow parts.
She ventured out further a few times and sunk like a rock. I was getting ready to rescue her a few times when she would manage to lunge her way to solid ground and then proceed to throw up all the water she had swallowed. Sure didn't stop her from going in the water and suddenly about 3 weeks ago, she seemed to get her legs organized and was swimming! Yeah!!!
Rob, yes, I apoligise for the statement I made. I realize the implications it could have on some owners relationships. I was raised with a special breed, who's loyalty and tolerance is second to none. I wish I could retract my statement. To all the Leerburg forum members- I apoligise!
Oh, no need to apologize. There are lots of very normal dogs out there who were dumped by their owners into the water and now won't stay out of it. I just try so hard to keep the trust with my mutts, that I can't see tossing them in (like I might have when I was younger).
A dog has alot of friends because he wags his tail instead of his mouth.

Me too. Absolutely might have. It took decades and many dogs for me to see that fear and anxiety are all over the map (and that gradual desensitizing just about never causes a problem).
