We live in an apt community so whatever potty area we choose will be maintained by someone who's not me.
Just a note about apartments with other dogs.
I am not sure if you already know this, but you will need to make sure that the pup doesn't have too much contact with a lot of community potty areas until the pup has gained some immunity.
Even if your pup has been vaccinated, it takes time for them to take and if exposed too soon to any number of things, could make your pup ill.
If you can, I would try to take your pup to an area, that has the least amount of "shared" potty area in preference of an area that would have the least amount of contact by other dogs.
Remember to try and stay away from places of high volume contact of other dogs etc too until pup gains immunity.

That's the plan. We have a little fenced-in dog area in our apt complex but I am not planning on going near that for quite a while.
I'll investigate the pet-walker option. Our friends would be happy to do it, but most are gainfully employed and live too far away (relatively, I live in NoVA).
I had prepared for coming home to a stinky puppy. Thought that was just going to happen from time to time. But, if leaving him that long is going to teach bad lessons, I'm not gonna risk it.

I adopt adults, and even so, I take them out every two hours until we have a clear understanding (the dog about how wonderful it is when he potties outside, because it results in a party and praise, and he never even once has to go inside because that teaches him something I don't want him to learn about indoor-potty possibilities or necessities; and me about his internal schedule).
He isn't coming to you knowing anything about where the toilet is at your house, remember. Puppies go when they need to go. It's your job for the puppy to be outside when it happens and for you to make a big deal about it when he does go outside.

Thanks for the kind words Joyce. We are both really excited and happy about our choice.
It's happening all over our family--my mom just took delivery of two GSD pups
Every time I see your signature it reminds me of them, since one is a longhair and the other a shorthair.

This is really the only major concern I have. Wife and I both have 9-to-5 office jobs.
Our particular puppy has a lot of bowel/bladder control already. When we visited the breeder he was the only one not peeing/pooping in the house. He was clearly too cool for it :P
Also, the breeder has been doing preliminary crate training w/him already, and hopefully picking him up on the long weekend will allow us to get started off on the right foot.

Are you able to bring the pup to work and keep him crated in a vehicle? Does weather permit?
Or do you have a friend who lives close to your work that would lend you some crate space in their home so you could run there every 2-3 hours and let him out for a quick potty break?

Haha. Unfortunately no. I have to take 1 hour of public transport to Washington DC every day.
The wife could do it, and we've already thought about this. She works in an office in rural VA, drives out there every day and could easily have her dog at work (family business). I had thought of this already, but maybe we need to start it immediately.

6 hrs may not be too long depending on the age of the puppy and his eating/drinking schedule. Most 10 wk old pups could hold it from 11 pm until 6 am if the house was quiet, for example.
You might want to borrow a littler crate for housebreaking.
So exciting!

This sounds wonderful! it might be helpful to have a crate in the car and at her office if the budget allows so she doesn't have to schlep the one crate back and forth, but either way will work.
You know we are dying for photos, right?
