When they are not facing you… have you found any problems with this, are you still able to see them?
I don't know about the disc ones, but the ones I had that pointed to the ground, you could see from any angle.

At least you haven't been using glow sticks and being all wishy washy for two years!!
I thought that was absolutely brilliant when you mentioned it. If it's working...
My hubby carries a big light, we have nothing on the dogs. When we saw this collar (and I'm sure glow sticks would have had the same effect) it was just too perfect. We could see the dog in the dark... one of those AHA, face slap moments. Why didn't we think of that?
Oh course, here it is on Leerburg. I really need to go through the entire product list.

This sounds good Phaedra, thanks. They sound quite similar. And good for about 1/2 a mile.

They work ok, but not well enough, and you have to make sure you buy them all the time, they can be hard to find in the winter.
I saw somewhere someone had modified a headlamp to go on their dogs collar. I will have to try to find the picture of it.
I am also interested in the light up leash, it would make me safer when walking at night.

Yes, when you provided that link, I saw that leash. Has me thinking too.
Headlight on collar?? Okay, we would probably be considered somewhat red necks, but my dogs are not going to be packing actual headlights.... too funny.
I think we'll be investing in the collars... but stocking up on some of those glowlights for an emergency might be a plan.

Not like a car headlight, one of the hands free ones that go on your head.

Oh wow, that's kind of neat. Would probably work well with any "searching" type of dog for night time work.

I've experimented with lots of different glow and reflective collars for my dogs when we run early mornings in the winter. The Night Dawg was OK, but had limited visibility, and really didn't last that long. I bought it at REI and returned it after a few weeks, because it was barely visible. Also, since I run with a headlamp, it's nice if the collar is both lit and reflective.
Some dog walkers in Anchorage had some awesome flashing lit blue collars. I never have been able to find those.
What's worked great for me (and I'll be buying a bunch of these soon as the nights are already getting longer), are construction workers reflective/flashing bands. You can replace the batteries, or replace the whole thing (without much cost). The whole band is yellow reflective, with an array of red LEDS that blink quickly. Very very visible. Use Two Velcro=ed together to go all the way around the dog's neck. You can order them from a construction catalog. I'll post a link.
Not to bash the Nite Dawg, but for dogs running off leash in a wooded area (really running) it just didn't work. Not visible enough, and the lighted band that goes inside the collar is not bright the whole length. Therefore, only one side of my dog's neck was even visible at any sort of distance, while the other side was barely lit. I've also used the 'spot light' which was OK, but also broke with use.
The construction reflective/flashing bands are visible for at least a quarter mile. After much trial and error, that's what I'll be using. They hold up decently to water and dirt. My dogs swim a few times every run, and they kept working.
Also, I'll probably buy a reflective vest for the dogs as well, or have them wear the harness with reflective tape. The fall can be especially dark due to leaf cover, and lack of snow.

And oh, my one dog was also a notorious night swimmer! He would quietly sneak in... but I would inevitably see the light flashing in the water! They aren't marketed as water proof, but the ones I had were. I also found them good in the winter, because the lights really bounced off the snow.
I have a Petzl Tikka2 headlamp for myself, which I could also see working well if attached properly to a collar... Though at $40+ I would want to make sure it was really on there.

Wow Kiersten, excellent post. Now that's exactly what we're dealing with and were my concerns with the collar. The one our friend had was so bright, it was actually hard to look at but this was in camp, not the night time hike through woods, where it would have been exactly what we were looking for.
Those construction bands sound really interesting!
