I will reasure that the trainer understands I want a social dog and a dog I can trust. But a dog that will protect me if needed. I will explain to him I want my dog to be friendly but protective if needed.
I don't know that you have the right dog or the the right plan for your dog here Alyssa. In April, he couldnt recover from some rough handling by a trainer and now your going to try fight or flight? Do you know what those words imply?
Well that was a question for the trainer too and my dog loved the new guy!! He did put pressure on my dog during the fight or flight training and once the agitation was over the trainer was able to handle him without a problem. Enzo was a happy normal dog!!! Which was not the case with the first trainer who gave him a bad experience in the training.
This isn't PPD advice, but dog training advice in general.
If I don't feel a million % comfortable with a trainer, vet, or groomer they aren't getting anywhere near my dog.
What about this trainer is making you ask this question here?
ALL FEELINGS ASIDE. Are you sure there isn't something in this situation that you don't feel comfortable with? The trainer? Maybe like Steve said and maybe not the right dog? Wrong plan?
And really, don't take these questions personally, Alyssa.
I think what is concerning is that you went to a professional dog trainer, asked a very basic PPD question, and basically didn't believe their answer or evaluation of your dog.
From what I gathered from this new trainer, my dog is stable enough to go through the training with pressure which I thought he couldn't because of what the first trainer told me. However the first trainer disliked my dog because I did not purchase the dog from him. So the dog likes the new trainers, responds well, social and happy with them.
Well I feel comfortable with the trainers. I guess I'm brain washed from the first guy who absolutely hated my dog from the beginning because I did not purchase the dog from him. I do feel comfortable with the new trainer. I just wanted to see what everyone thought about once PPDs are done with training if the are social. Guess it all depends on the training experience.
I haven't visited the site, but when I hear a trainer start talking about fight or flight training, I know what comes to my mind first. And I'm not allowed to say it out loud on this forum.
Some trainers swear by it, I know. But in my mind, it's a very iffy method on most dogs and down right inhumane for many.
And Alyssa, I still think you should be thinking neutral, not social.
