A number of very interesting replies for which I thank all. I am not familar with the malinois ,would that dog have a lighter frame than a GSD therefore the muscle/ weight ratio would be higher than the Gsd.
That'll change after a few weeks here!
Mals are smaller in every way. Lighter bones, smaller heads, probably less muscle required. They are certainly quicker, faster, and far more agile. I can't speak to their muscle-to-bone ratio though.

the consenus seems to be that feed for correct weight ,exercise for muscle development is the way forward irrespective of whether the dog is sl or wl?
There isn't a real consensus, most people will just tell you to do what works for your dogs for your purposes. I (like most on here) like to keep dogs lean with some ribs showing. The more you exercise them, the more you will need to feed them.
Many of the ring sport mals are around the 60# or so range. While the SchH lines are generally larger dogs. In either case, they are built (body type)differently than GSDs. If you were to put a GSD & a mal both of the same weight & fitness level, you would see a difference in the overall look of the dogs.
I am sure Kadi or Konnie will see this & add more info.
