My dog had lepto last year. I have searched my brain to try and figure out where he possibly could have gotten it.
I'll never know.
The good news is that I immediately took him to the vet whose first words to me were "Wow"... he had never seen anyone see it so soon in their dog. He anticipated a full recovery.
He had the first round of lepto vaccine as a pup and I never gave any booster. Interestingly, the vet informed me that it would not have made any difference because the servovar they vac for is not the one he was infected with.
Honestly, since then my dog has had health issues. Possible anaplasmosis, elevated liver enzymes and immune mediated polyarthritis. Right now I'm tapering off Pred due to a relapse and liver enzymes up again since re-starting pred.
I LOVE MY VET. He has been pro-actively researching his weird liver issues, speaking with other vets, calling me and persuing every avenue of info.
Its war out there and these diseases are horrible.
Most recently we discussed Bartonella, which appears to be an immergent disease. Like I said. war.
I did call around to vet offices in my vacinity, including the one that recommended the vaccine, and none have any reported cases of Lepto this year. I think I will hold off on the vaccine for now, especially with winter approaching, and keep in touch with the vet offices about Lepto cases in the area.
