Aw, I'm a mean owner, my dog has only one crate...
However when I did have two dogs at my parents, each dog had their own crate, it was their space and one dog was not permited in the other's crate. That was there personal area with their main sleeping pillow. Other sleeping areas around the house however were "first come first serve"

I would suggest not allowing other dogs in a particular dog's crate. I mainly see the issue coming up with intact dogs (both sexes) but on occasion this will lead to marking which is a pita once it gets started. Multiple crates however is no issue. I have soft crates and wire crates for my herd. No problems there, I just wash them before they go back into storage.

I don't know how others feel, but I have always had a strict policy around crates. Each dog had a crate that they used exclusively, and nobody else was allowed inside. When I removed a dog from a crate, I would shut the door so there was no opportunity for anyone else to climb in.
I agree a million percent. The crate, the food -- these are inviolable (by other dogs).
Jamie before we got the second dog we only had one too. It only got out of control when the other one entered the picture, now it's crates for the house, crates for the cars, crates when people come in etc, etc...
