Also, good news - puppy had a formed, normal poop tonight when I got home from work. She did strain a little to pass it, but it was quite normal. We're sticking with the rice diet for a few more days, at least.
I was thinking back to my years in the veterinary world - I used to suggest rice and baked, skinless chicken as a bland diet. What are you thoughts on the cooked chicken part? Just for future reference.

Now would be when I would add the small amount of cooked chicken, because of what you said about straining a little.
Bland and anti-diarrheal aren't always exactly the same thing.
Boneless meat can be stool-softening (think how raw feeders can often gauge meat/bone ratio via the poop consistency, backing off on bone if the poop is hard ... or even sometimes marbles).
Ah, yes. Poop-watching and -adjusting is a delicate art.

This boneless-meat effect was why I was saying earlier that if the pup would accept the plain (no meat) mushy rice, that was probably the most efficient way to get the poop to normalize. Rice has a binding property that boneless meat doesn't.

Ahhh, I see. So, add a small amount of cooked chicken today, and then where do I go? How and when should I move them over to raw? Should I just forget the Nature's Variety stuff, or is that "okay" to use? I sort of, originally, thought of it as a being a bridge for me to move from that to true raw. But now, I'm not so sure.

Sounds good. And yes, I have a huge box of the NV in the freezer right now.
I was just unsure about this product since it contained liver and other organ meat - wasn't sure if that was "too much" to use to start the switch over.
I'll look into the chicken formula, but honestly, I might just flip to raw without using a "bridge", and just keep the NV on hand for variety for later on down the road.

Erica, I started my first dog on Nature's Variety patties (went cold turkey almost 2 1/2 years ago)when I wanted to go raw.
I fed those patties while I read up on everything I could to understand how to make sure I would do the raw diet correctly.
Many dogs do great on those premade raw diets with no problems,I know mine did.
It is completely up to you, but if you have them, I would feed them as they are so easy and completely balanced.
No need to worry about the extras in there, things like liver etc.
They have the right amounts, I doubt your dog would have any
troubles. As long as you are feeding the right amounts and not over feeding, you should be fine.
You won't regret making the change in diet, it is just the best thing you can do for your dogs health.

Joyce,
Thanks for the info on NV! I appreciate hearing that using NV as a bridge worked well. That was my intention from the start, as I wanted to keep reading on balancing raw, and make sure I could do it, before I took the whole plunge.

That is exactly why I fed NV as well. I really had a lot of reading to do, but wanted that immediate change in diet while I read.
It was fine for a while, but is incredibly expensive over the long haul. We now have two, so it is so much cheaper to find a bulk provider for raw. Once you do that, it can be even less expensive than the super premium kibbles as well, and so much better for their health to have the fresh food.

The way I figured it, raw will be cheaper than the Orijen for both dogs. Besides, after finally meeting a lifetime raw fed dog "in person" and seeing how healthy his mouth and teeth were for a 6-year-old dog, I just couldn't wait any longer. But, I wanted some time to get in touch with some of the meat markets and butchers in the area.
Anyway, like you said, the NV is pretty pricey, especially for feeding two dogs.
And it's not like I keep anything in my freezer besides ice cubes, as it is, so I figure it won't be too bad to have it full of meat!

Thank you guys so much for your help.
Both dogs are doing great. I've started to add VERY small amounts of raw, skinless chicken into the mix, and we are still pooping normally. As I've added raw, I've decreased the cooked. Still with some mushy rice, but gradually cutting down on the rice as I add the chicken. Slowly and small amounts!
It is a little hard to see the puppy looking a bit lower in weight. However, I don't want to mess anything up.
Once I have eliminated the rice and am completely on the raw chicken for meals, where do I go from there? I know that Ed has a puppy menu posted, but I also know I should introduce new things slowly....so, how do I start moving to "balancing" the meals?
I guess I just want to make sure that the puppy, especially, is getting all the right nutrients. This bout of GI upset has caused her to drop a few pounds, and I keep my puppies lean to start with.
