Aren't Jolly balls the best? I had such great hopes for the 10" one. The handle is always the weak spot but it was the largest one I could find that is made of the same porous material, the rest were hard plastic. Anybody has good ideas for 10" + toy please let me know!
You know Ana, I think the handle on my ball may have been the hard plastic one. It’s hard to remember because it was with us for such a short time. And yes, I thought they were supposed to be the best too, came with all kinds of “indestructible” advertising on the packaging.
Here are some pictures, perhaps you can identify it and see what happened very quickly with us.
This is where the problems come in. I thought it was a lot tougher than it was; after all they’re made horses. Flat teeth and hooves I suppose, not sharp canines.
He was so interested in it and this was at the time we were working on a hose issue so I thought perfect for some distraction training. I kept a longer piece of the old hose that he’s sectioned off (I knew I could use it for something). It was cute to watch him struggle.
This is a bad picture… but he was a good boy and he chose the ball… but look at the deliberate path over the hose and those spread out toes…. “Yeah, yeah… I know what you want mom, but this hose is mine! Later… when you’re not looking”
Then I remember getting distracted for a minute, literally no time at all (probably a neighbor with some quick nice weather chat) and turned around to these innocent two… Vince guarding the hose (he’s so cool, he just gets it) and Echo distracted with the new toy.
So I took it and we played soccer for a bit. After a few hard knocks it deflated but kept springing back until they both bit into it at the same time. The tug game was on and they both won. It ripped in half and I just tossed it into the garbage.
Half an hour of training and exercise = $28.00
Entertainment while destroying “quality” toys in minutes - priceless.
But again, it may not be the one you have. It wasn’t the toy for my boys and I’ll bet a little maligator would be able to chew that handle off in seconds too, should he choose.
With the little chunks he was able to chew off, I wouldn’t recommend this toy for dogs. Of course this is just my experience.
We have a BF Goodrich 16” radial hanging from our Russian Olive that's really standing up well and the boys love it.
The jolly ball is one of Roger's favorites, I have had it since he was young, picked it up at the tack store. I recently saw them in a local pet store and almost grabbed another but I noticed the handle was different, I didn't buy it.
Mine looks different from the one CJ posted, it doesn't have the little bumps all over it, however, Roger is not an aggressive chewer, just loves to carry, toss, and chase. He usually grabs from the round and compresses it, so much so that he has a hard time releasing it.
He only has it while I am there, so it's good info to be aware of as my daughter has one for her dutchie pup, he may do a better job of destroying it!
Ana, very cute pup, and great work you are doing with him!

very funny and so true! My female is a chewer and there seems to be no toy that she can't eventually destroy.
It helps to put it away for making it last a little longer, but eventually they all become toast. I am thinking about trying a
Jolly Egg next time to see if this one will last longer. http://leerburg.com/1312.htm
Haydn does not seem to be a chewer about the toys so far. He'd rather bite and re-bite and hump it. We do play fetch with the smallest pink Jolly and with Orbee Cosmo. A 12" Cosmo would be just perfect if only they made them that big!
I've got the feeling he will be getting the Egg anyway
I don't think the Jolly Balls are for heavy chewing, more for toss. With any toy, we need to monitor.
Absolutely, I totally agree. Even our tire is slid up on an out-of-reach branch when we’re not there to actively monitor their play. And with Echo, he’s really not a destroy type chewer (any more) either. I think with the distraction training, his frustration level was so high that he took it out on the ball (this was early in the “no more hose” issue).
Those Egges look like a wonderful toy. They sound great anyway… we’ll see. One will definitely on my next Leerburg order too.
Oh and Ana, I have "Venus". It's Vince's all time favorite!! Incredibly durable, not one mark after months of use.
