A wonderful book for young readers is "Silver Chief, Dog of the North." I kind of inherited this book from my dad when I was a kid and read it over and over. Since my own copy is safely tucked away in a box in the attic, I had to look on Amazon just now to see who the author was. It's Jack O'Brien.
About Gov. Brian Schweitzer's Border Collie who he takes to work. Nice book for the younger set. BTW, Brian's sister, Mary, raises some really nice working Rotties.
101 Ways to Do More With Your Dog, by Kryra Sundance.
Features the different dog activities available. Great photos. Page 133 features a sidebar on one of our club members, Tim Wilmoth and his patrol dog, Kimon.
Dean Koontz has a couple.
'The Watchers'
as well as a newer dog one, that I'm not sure on the name.
The darkest evening of the year.
Sweet, touching and it makes me sob everytime I read it.
I have to admit I avoid dog stories a lot because I always end up a crying mess. I can't even watch the fox and the hound because I know what is coming
We have been reading a series called the Chronicle of Ancient darkness with our son. The first book is called Wolf brother.
They are about a little boy who is orphaned and a wolf cub who is also orphaned that become inseparable. there are passages from the Wolf's point of view that are done really well.
He calls the boy tall tailless
Good reads with plenty of fantasy and action and sweetness for kids and adults, 8 and up or so. There is magic and action and sweetness and lessons learned.
When I was a kid, I was enchanted with books by Albert Payson Terhune, who wrote collie stories. (the Sunnybank collies) They were great books for a kid. Terhune was a breeder and author...
Some great old pics here: http://www.sunnybankcollies.us/collies2.htm
Yes, definitely all stories by Albert Payson Terhune are wonderful stories. My father's family had a collie desceded from Sunnybank Collies (the parents were both Sunnybank Collies) when he was growing up.
Also, Lassie Come Home (I forget the author) is very good.
I did not know Albert Payson Terhune bred collies. I read all those as a child, the Jack London ones, all of those. Lately, I've enjoyed "The Art of Running in the Rain" and the "Edward Sawtelle" book.
