Geez, Melissa, that's not good.
How is the area now?
My Papillon had a reaction like that when she was younger. Scary, really thought I was going to lose her. I never figured out what got her, or what she got, but she is always going after bugs of any kind.

Her lips are still a bit puffy and she itches from time to time but otherwise she's alright.
I spoke to my vet and there are a few options available that i have to think over. allergy tests followed by custom shots are one (omg... the cost), reactive treating is another, moving to a place where there are no spiders is another (Antarctica anyone?) and behavior is a final one. How does one proof a dog off house spiders and other creatures which crawl the earth when they're just so yummy and bite size?

I didn’t think immunotherapy worked for spider bites or mosquito allergies. With spider bites the venom will not cause anaphylaxis like a bee sting. I would worry more about the immunotherapy. I’d spend the money making sure your house was an unfriendly arachnid area.
If I see mine go after one, she'll stop when told. Forget about all the times I am not watching! We had a yellow jacket invasion, in the house, as the weather was cooling off this year. She'd jump half way up the wall to catch them!

I don't think that she's being bit. She's eating them. So he said it could be done according to his research contact but it would be expensive because it's not a normal allergen they worry about when they do food allergy treatments. When one thinks of food allergies that are this bad you usually think peanuts or soy, not spider meat.
I guess I could bug bomb on a icy night and see if that kills most of them that are stowing away in the nooks and crannies of the house which will give me some time until spring. I live in the woods so no matter what I do... they'll be back again.

OMG that is so scary, her poor little face
I would try bug bombing too!
If you have a crawlspace under your house don't forget to throw a couple bombs under there.

As far as i know she should be able to digest the venom with no problem its a protein, and would not effect them it would get broken down before it enters the blood stream, she is probably getting bit in her mouth before the spider is dead. Either way you need to get rid of the spiders good luck.
Another thought do some research and find what kind of birds or wildlife will eat the spiders and try to atrack them via certain kinds of bird houses and such, this works for garden pests should work for spiders as well again good luck.

Yes, if only it were that easy. I live in the Yukon and we still get spiders - they are just big (not as big as Australia) but about the size of a penny. I actually rely on my guard cat "Sabertooth", to keep the vermin under control. But alas, I am sure they even exist in Antarctica...

High doses of Vit. C will help with spider toxin. Dr. Kenner did extensive work with C for all sorts of maladies.
http://www.seanet.com/~alexs/ascorbate/198x/smith-lh-clinical_guide_1988.htm
The paper is long but if you bring up the page, then push Control F on your keyboard and a search bar will pop up, you can search for "spider" and find the relevant section.
You could put sodium ascorbate buffered C crystals on her food (mixed with yogurt?) every day as a precaution.
I wouldn't use Ester C, as one of the ingredients is L-Aspartic Acid which is an excitotoxin.
Injectable C is an option for emergency situations. It is acid so some lidocaine mixed with it makes it much easier on the injectee for intramuscular injections.

Great article on Vit C, thanks for the link!
I give Ester C all the time, and I just read the ingredients.
It is the "Ester C" brand and contains calcium ascorbate along with the bioflavinoids. Maybe it is a certain brand that contains
L-Aspartic Acid, but this one does not.
Anyway, interesting info Debbie, thanks.
