Garrett said he's open to the idea!!! But, wouldn't our neighbors notice an increase in bees? Remember I'm in SoCal and we share walls and yards with each other...
The bees have been a blast. I started with simple intentions of one little hive. A week after getting them started, we got another one This spring we will be expanding to 4.
The first year, we didn't get any honey. They had to build up their comb and any honey they produced we let them keep for over wintering. They are currently wrapped and clustered waiting for warmer weather. I have to open them up when we get warm again (about 30 degrees) to see if they need any sugar candy to get them through.
They really are a lot of fun. I have them in the back yard and have spent several evenings in a lawn chair 5 feet away just watching them.
During the spring and summer, they are too busy worrying about getting nectar and pollen that they don't even notice you standing next to the hive. Paul has even opened them up without smoking them (I don't have the guts for that yet). Once the weather turns a little cooler, they get a little more protective.
I don't know anything about beekeeping in a city, but I am sure there are beekeepers near you that you can ask. Since getting my bees I have had MULTIPLE offers from people who want me to set the hives up on their property to help pollinate their garden or flowers. If you can't set up a hive in the city, spread the word, and see if someone would like free pollination of their garden or orchard.
Oh, and I named the Queens Cleopatra and Nefertari
