Thanks everyone! We had two beds for him, one ended up giving him rashes (go figure lol) and the other one we have in the living room as his "go to your place" it is a nice plush one and he likes laying on it down stairs. Our bed is that tempur pedic, so of course we made excuses and ended up letting him up. I knew it wasn't a good idea, he just gives those cute puppy dog eyes and well you know the rest =)
We are getting that bed for him as soon as we get our taxes back, and we are going to either be putting him in his crate with his bed from now on or in our room with his bed. depending on how nicely he behaves. Last time we kicked him off our bed and onto his he acted like a total brat and was barking at us or crying obnoxiously. So he got moved to his crate downstairs for a couple weeks until he could behave himself.
I am glad its just easily solved with moving him and not a huge pack structure issue. That is what I was concerned about. I really thought everyone was going to tell me we have to start back with ground work again.
and just want to add, I know it is still not a good idea but my daughter is 4 and always sleeps on the outside of the bed away from the dog, I am always in between them, when she does come in. And I was a single mom most of her life, I just got married not that long ago, so we have always slept together and I have to admit, I love it so I don't see that changing anytime soon.

lol Yah he does look all cute and comfy But he gets frustrated and woken up often too so he is on board with moving him. Plus, I am the crazy dog lady in the house, so usually what I say goes with him anyways. He knows I do the research and generally know what is best for him.

Reminds me of the old joke; Doc, it hurts when I do this -- and the Doc says, well don't do that.
Ya know somethings a dog does is only because we let them. Any behavior that is reinforced is more likely to occur again.

Hahaha Love the quote.

If you use the clicker and treats to train him to lay down and stay on the bed, that will give him positive associations with his own bed. If you always remove him from your bed, that will not have the power of positive association. If you are letting him stay in the bedroom but on his own bed, that should be enough of a reward. If he doesn't stay on his own bed, the next step is out the door. I'm using the Place command now with both Skipper and Jethro. It is so handy to get them to lay down and settle anywhere I ask them (crates, daybeds, a towel spread out on the porch, a folded bedsheet under the kitchen table, etc.).
You have to be consistent, though. If you give in to those pleading puppy eyes, you are going to double the work of getting him to know his Place in the bedroom.

At the risk of saying something really unpopular, I would never allow a dog and a small child to sleep together like that. Not in a million years. Even a 1% chance that the child could get scratched, bit, or pushed off the bed would be too much for me to accept, and this is a lot riskier than 1%.
And what if Capone falls? The dog has serious HD and I would be worried about him getting tangled and falling/tripping.
Too much to go wrong here, IMO. But I'm just a paranoid person.

Drs. Foster & Smith Deluxe Orthopedic Pad
This is what I have for my 90# GSD; she luvs!!
I didn't know how to copy link; I paid about $100 for bed, plastic zipper liner, & a zipper washable cover!!
She always has her hips on this bed, wether her head is on it or not!
Just wanted to add, I also have the sheepskin bed sold here at Leerburg, in warmer months, that is her favorite!

Agree; & agree with my dog having her bed, & me having Mine!
& I have always Agreed, & Adhered to Ed Frawley Pack Structure; besides not wanting my dog on furniture, or in my bed!
I'm glad it is not a "habit" I started, as she doesn't know about getting on furniture, & she much prefers her bed!
& she is a German Shedder!!

I didn't really think about the child/dog issue til it was brought up . I understand though! and Our mattress is on the floor right now, so there is no worry of falling.
