Barbara could he take the ball out of the rolly ball one? That dog LOVES a ball and if he could get it out that would be the end of that one!
I may try one of those bowls for the food and see if that slows him down. He was one of my fosters before I adopted him and he spent a few months at the pound and who knows how many on the streets before that. He has always eaten pretty quickly but he only sometimes throws it up.
He is fed twice a day and quite frankly with our schedules I don't think I could reliably feed him 3 times a day.
As for the water I'm afraid that rocks or the one with the floaty thing might be too tempting for the 2 year old kid and the trouble making GSD! LOL.
The water is down all day but he is crated when we are gone. If we have been gone for a while and he gets really thirsty that is when he gulps the water. I try to interrupt his drinking when that happens to slow him down but it doesn't always work.

Juliana, Maybe try not offering him a full bowl.
put in maybe 1/2 cup of water at a time. When he finishes that wait a bit longer then add another half cup.
for the food, you can try feeding on a cookie sheet or a spread out newspaper. If the food is spread out he can't really inhale large mouthfuls at a time.
had another idea.
try INVERTING a smaller bowl into his food bowl, like a dome. Put his kibble in the space between the inverted bowl and his food dish. He wont' be able to pick up huge mouthfuls because it will be spread out and he'll have to work a bit to get it. Essentially he'll have to slow down in order to get all the food.
does that make sense cause i can picture it in my head perfectly!

Edit reason: new idea
Take it outside in the yard and make a track out of it. Make him do obedience for it, reward with a handful of kibble. Hide small piles in corners, make it a "find it!" Game. Feeding takes longer but you get some quality training time in.
I just want to thank everyone for their suggestions. We decided to go the cheap route first. I dumped it on the floor of his crate and it slowed him down :-)
