I went through this with JD. Hind leg (don't remember which), shoulder, head (when he ran head first in to his sister while playing) and we won't talk about the time he got his head stuck in his sister's "jolly ball" when he was 8 weeks old. Fortunately the "jolly ball" incident didn't end in an injury. Just scared the heck out of my hubby who was watching him at the time. Hmmm...seems like most of JD's injuries was when hubby was playing with him outside. Note to self: Keep hubby away from any other new puppies! Think that will work??
Callie also slipped on a tile floor when she was less than a year old and pulled one of her hips.
Puppies will be puppies....don't let it stress you too much. Mine always bounced right back.
So tonight he got his evening walk. And he looked just fine. He pulled and jumped and did normal puppy stuff. At some point I decided we could jog a bit, and he immediately took a spill. Now he's having trouble walking in a straight line and sitting, though it seems to abate above a certain speed.
Hi Ross,
My puppy buyers are advised to do no "jogging" with any puppy until at least 12 months of age, preferably 18 months of age. That applies to any puppy, notwithstanding one who may have possibly been injured the day before.
Self-limiting exercise is best. IE: if you have a long line, let him zoom around on his own to his hearts content. But I consider a sustained jog with a human to be forced, unnatural exercise, and recommend avoiding it to anyone who owns one of the puppies that I put on this earth.
Take care of them while they are peanuts, and you'll have many years in the future to jog together, forgoing some other health or orthopedic issue.
you might want to have a chiropractic VET check him out, also, if he continues to not act quite right. Just to be sure he hasn't put something out of wack.
Many dogs will continue to 'work' with injuries that are not all that severe....but they will build up/accumulate over time & can cause more serious issues later on.
