Kenzi came from rescue. It was a good overall experience. They worked really well with me and even made a few exceptions to their rules because they said they felt I'd be a good fit for her. I emailed back and forth, talked to them, met with them. And they even adopted out a BC to me as a college student with no fenced yard..
Basically the advice I'd give to folks thinking about rescue is to really sell yourself to them. They don't know you from Adam. Show them why you'd provide a good home for their dogs. Like breeders, there are good rescues and questionable ones. If you get a weird feeling or are felt you being made to jump through to many hoops, move on. There are plenty of homeless dogs out there and plenty more places to choose from.
I will say that our local rescue agency made my wife's adoption of our new wiener dog smooth and painless.
My home is now protected by 11 pounds of spitting fury.....
Was it a breed rescue or more general?
It was a General rescue organization ( I help them out with training issues ) , they just happened to have a mini dachshund there and my wife filled out the papers and adopted him while I was helping with some training questions.
Needless to say, both Fetz and I were thrilled.....
I called about a foster dog on Tuesday, very interested. I haven't heard from them yet, and have come to think it's not meant to be.
Maybe you'll hear something this weekend! If the contact people have regular jobs it could just be that they respond to calls/emails on the weekends.
But if you don't hear from them by Wed/Thurs, I'd go ahead and try to contact them one more time before saying it wasn't meant to be. Nana sure looks like a sweetheart.
If it is meant to be, it will happen. I decided I wasn't going to get Kenzi after I met her the first time. Sweet dog, but she didn't seem to be quite what I was looking for. Then a week later she was moved to a different foster home and her personality just popped out and this was posted on the rescue site. So I contacted them again trying to figure out when I was going to make the 5 hr round trip to pick her up. And lo and behold her new foster home was just 30 minutes away from me!!
