Yeah, ix-nay on the spray. My extremely high drive GSD simply did not suit the xpen lifestyle... rather, it did not suit him. It is too stimulating for some dogs to have that much space and access to the outer world for so long. It's either, out and supervised, or crate.
It depends on the dog, but honestly, I think if you have a really high drive dog, they only way you are going to "deter" him with water, is do drown him in it***
***just a figure of speech, to prove a point, please do not water-board your dog!***
I think what Steve is saying about it becoming play time would apply to my pup. And the worst part would be drying her off, she loves the tub cause I used two towels, one for her mouth and one to dry with. I understand Phaedra's point, as my pup is always calm in her crate which I leave in the xpen so the big dogs can't pester her, but still is part of the house hold
hi Randy, I haven't started yet, why would you not ? The more opinions I get the better
Okay, so... if we're using a spray bottle as a deterrent, what are we telling our dogs about water? About spray bottles? About certain sounds?
Imagine how much fun you'll have if you need to spray a flea treatment on the dog down the road.
Or if the Schutzhund prospect associates the deterrent with the *sound* of the squirt bottle, and the clatter stick in training reminds him of the same?
Why would you want to train your dog to be afraid of something?
I should add that a spray bottle won't work with all dogs, and I didn't use it as a punishment, only a few times to distract her from cat obsessing.
I was very successful using positive reinforcement as shown in the Leerburg vids.
Some things are serious or dangerous enough that you have to stop them. If spraying them works, I don't see it as anything terrible. Like a lot of things, there could be a downside or it could create a different problem but sometimes there are things that have to be stopped.
I have watched the dvd's on raising puppies and am doing most of it right, my pup only jumps up for a few seconds mabey once a day and by then I always call or send the big dogs away and she settles down right away. Other than that her xpen manners are great, she sits as I open the door and only comes out when invited, or I place her back in or close the door quick which only happens every few days at worst.
Again thanks to all for the input, I do have more questions and look foward to when I have the experience to contribute
i too have a pup who is ex-pun un friendly. he is 3 months and has alwasy stayed in his pen..played with lots of mental games and toys..but got sick of them today and litteraly JUMPED out of it today. he has in the past jumped up on the sides but only now and then. i always ignored him and he stopped. until today. so now that he has figured out ex pen is easily out witted..am i screwed? is it now crate or leash for him? would a VERY BIG crate (st. bernard size) be an exceptable ex pen for him? i couldn't fit about ten of him in there.
